At 13 months, Aethyn's favorite books are the books that have things/animals and that have texture...the touch and feel books! He also likes books that rhyme when you read them! He likes books that have flaps to open. Grandma just got him a Halloween book like that and he loves it, but he likes to try and do it himself and I am afraid he will rip it! He has the two books you mentioned and the berenstain bears Books, books that have like the caterpillar and as you turn the pages it changes...stuff like that! Little golden books are good ones too! He like to point at the animals and I say what it is.

Hefty books that you can't rip pages out of..LOL Reason being they like to turn pages and do it themselves but they are not exactly careful. DD is 18 months old and won't sit to read but likes picture books with or without sound. She loves the ones that have the picture in the book and also on a button on the book and when you pu**** it says what it is. Kids aren't really too interested in actually listening to a story (at least mine isn't). Maybe if you start reading stories as infants she would like to be read to more. Trial and error for sure.
Drew is only 2 1/2 months old, so he doesn't have any favorites. But I started buying books when I found out I was pregnant. I didn't care what they were, I bought them. I bought a TON of books at the dollar store - they're mostly learning ones. I read to him Sesame Street "Sleep Tight Lil One" that I got at the dollar store. He loves it because there are lots of colors.
So I say, buy whatever you can, any book is a good book (to me anyways!)
FYI - my favorite is Five Little Monkey's - haha! It was Drew's first book!
My personal favorite is "You are My I Love You" by Maryann Cusimano. It makes me tear up everytime I read it, and I received it when I was pregant with my first son...eight years ago. It's just simple and touching.
Both of my boys really liked "Ten Little Ladybugs." It's very colorful and has knobby little ladybugs attached to the pages with holes cut out so you can see them as you flip the pages.
And, of course, Sandra Boynton.
