Surgeon says to keep trying to lose weight
Would you have heart surgery performed by a foot doctor? No? Would you let your OB perform your gastric bypass? No again?
Your surgeon is not an OB and doesn't know what the hell he's talking about when it comes to your pregnancy. Actually, I think your surgeon just committed medical malpractice by advising you to "diet" while being pregnant.
Get a second opinion (and third) from your OB and a nutritionist. You don't need to gain 47 pounds, but you do need to gain something and you DO need to eat more than 1000 calories a day. Sorry, you're pregnant now and your baby comes first. If you think eating 1000 calories a day is putting your baby first well then you would be sorely mistaken.

I have consulted with my High Risk OB, OB and Nut - they have all reccomended different things - but adding healthy carbs back in was #1 priority for fetal development. Here's the break down they each gave me.
Nut 1800 calories, 90 grams protein, 100 grams carbs
OB 2000-2200 calories 90 grams protein, AT LEAST 100 grams carbs
HR OB 1800-2000 calories 1/2 from carbs, 20% from protein and the rest can be from "other"
On a side note my OB also told me that she is OK if I loose weight during the pregnancy or don't gain a pound but only if I am eating like I should. Right now with the morning (all freakin day) sickness she told me to make sure I am getting as many carbs as possible and to fill in with protein later. Ketosis is VERY VERY dangerous for the baby - from what I understand it hinders brain and neurologic development.
Hope that this helps!

even *I* agree with andrea and courtney on this.
all involved in my pregnancy from my nut/surgeon/pa at my surgeons office to the dietician/HR ob/Reg OB/diabetes clinic lady all agree with the amount of protein, carbs, and calories I should be getting. weird but true. lol
I am at a minimum of 1500 cals a day. minimum! if I get less, I get chewed out. I can take in as much more as I want as long as they aren't crap calories. I am usually around 1700 and still haven't gained back all the initial 16lbs I lost.
I'd rather be safe than sorry and have a healthy baby then purposely continue to lose weight and risk his health.
