Surgeon says to keep trying to lose weight
I had an appointment with my surgeon today to talk to him about me being pregnant. He suggested I keep eating how I have been and that I don't have to add in any carbs. He also said I could keep with the 1000 calories a day that I've been doing since my lap band surgery and that it's fine if I lose weight since I still have a BMI of 39. He said the baby will be able to get nutrients from my fat stores and to just make sure I take my vitamins and drink my water and all will be fine. I was surprised by this just because I've read on here alot that many people are told to add in carbs to their diets and to up their calories and he said not too. I'm glad actually though cause I don't want to get back into old habits and gain a bunch of weight like I did with my first pregnancy (47 lbs).
Go for it.
But ketones, in fetal brain development, is the absolute same as drinking alcohol while pregnant. And that's the same as a very low carb, low calorie diet.
Your surgeon, who does not specialize in babies, does not know this. I bet that if you were to show him the studies of ketones on fetal brain development he would recind his recommendations and suggest you try to at least stay the course until you finish your pregnancy.
So yes, in the case of growing babies, your surgeon is an idiot. In the case of your band, your baby doctor is an idiot. It's the way it is.

I tried to reply once and it did not show up. So you maybe seeing this twice. My OBGYN told me with my last pregnancy that I could do Weigh****chers. Because I was 296 and it would be healthier for me and the baby at delivery if I lost some weight. This time my doctors have instructed me to gain no more than 10 pounds but I would be fine if I lost. This was from my OBGYN and not my surgeon. The only rule I self imposed is if I am truly hungry, my stomach is growling I eat.
Good Luck,
Emily

My surgeon said that more than likely I will actually gain towards the end of my pregnancy but to keep it to a max of 15 lbs and that if I continue to eat the way I am that I'll be fine. I haven't talked yet to my OB as they don't see patients till I'm about 9 weeks but I'm assuming it'll be similar. I was on weigh****chers when I got pregnant with my daughter and stopped it cause my OB doc told me too. I was 325 after losing 45 lbs on that diet and I gained it back cause I was told to stop eating that way. Like I said in my post, I gained 47 lbs with my daughter and had pregnancy induced hypertension, probably because of my weight so I definately don't want to do that again.
I think also that recommendations might be different for us lap band patients.

Sorry, have to agree with Andrea on this one. You should take in no less then 1200 calories a day, and should be taking in up to 1600 for you and baby. Losing weight because you have morning sickness, or because you are burning more calories growing baby is one thing, but purposely trying to do it and not adding carbs is a recipe for disaster. You should also buy keytone strips to test your urine every morning if you are going to stick with a high protein diet to make sure you are NOT in keytosis, and if they show you are, add carbs (although it is better to NOT get into keytosis as it is sometimes hard to get out of it).
The beauty of the band is that you can get right back on track after you are done being pregnant, and I know, I did it. I gained 30 lbs while pregnant, and at seven weeks PP I am only five lbs away from my pre-pregnancy weight. Increasing your calories does not mean you eat crap and give in to every whim, it means eating responsibly for you and your baby so that both of you can be healthy.

AGREE 100% with Andrea and Courtney. A new doctor would be #1 on my priority list because he obviously has no clue what he is talking about. Purposely trying not gain weight is harmful to both you and the baby. I suggest you do some reading up on wls and pregnancy. You are in a crucial stage of your pregnancy and I would hate to see anything happen that could have been avoided.
