What do you call it?

When do you use "baby" words  (doggy , bug, birdie) versus real names (Ivy, spider, crow)

I realize as Cooper grows older he is paying more attention to what we call things.

Our dog's name is Ivy.  (Wrigley Field Ivy)  But I call her all sorts of things (Pumpkin, Whisker Face, Cold Nose,  Furry Butt, Brown Eyes, Beagle, etc etc)  When I "baby talk" with Cooper I called her "Funny Fuzzy Ivy".

It occured to me that I am probably really confusing him, right?  Should I stick to one word / name for things to help him learn names?

(One time my nephew, two at the time, got all upset because I said "oh look at that bug" and he said "No, Aunt Cindy *that* is a MILLIPEDE !".  Well..... how was I supposed to know that 2 year olds were so technical ???? )

Thanks!

Cindy

My hubby and I have had some debates on the whole "poopy" issue.  I am all for using proper terms... penis, etc.  BUT... I HATE THE TERM BOWEL MOVEMENT (and BM).  Plus "Do you have to urinate" sounds so clinical....

I grew up having "BMs" and "urinating" so you'd think I'd be okay with it.  But I call it "pee-pee" and "poopy" now.....  before long we have to decide what we will have Cooper call it.

(I do know it won't be boo boo!)

I think for your dog it is no big deal and for beloved family friends and such, otherwise I always used regular words. Dog, bird, bug. I did not get technical unless we were reading about about types of trucks or birds. Also one of the best things you can do is read to him. It can be anything even the newspaper. Just hearing your read does wonders.

Thanks, Emily!

I know I need to read to him more.  He's not a patient child to sit and be read to.... a shame since I love to read!

I am going to make a point to read more to him.

I think you are doing great! Remember he does not need to sit still. He could be off playing, he can still hear you. That is what my mom always told me, she had seven kids and she use to make us older ones read our homework out loud to the younger ones. My baby sisters are 15 years younger than me so I read my high school books to them. It was great for all of us.

your little babies are so cute!  is you dog a pit?  we used to have a pit that looked just like that named Scrappy.

As for your question I have no idea, sorry just wanted to comment on your cute pic.

Thanks, Karen.  :-)

Ivy is a beagle/terrior (mom) and boxer (dad).  The "brindle" color she has came from her dad the boxer .... but she is the only one of her litter to get that coloring.

Many people think she's a pit mix or a sheppard mix because of the brindle coloring.

She's a sweet lovey dog who Cooper ADORES.

Take Care,

Cindy

Cooper isn't going to suffer major issues because of a little baby talk. Getting him to vocalize and interact with you verbally is what is important. We say poopy and potty in our house. Dave laughs at me because I make combos  of everything...Our dog is "Sami Dog", our cats are "Calvin Kitty Cat and Hobbes Kitty Cat".

They say you are supposed to read to your kids for at least 20 minutes per day. I read to Niko before his naps and at bedtime. There's no way he'd sit still for 20 whole minutes. He just has way too many things to do.lol.

Hugs,
Angie
