GD test - failed????

OK, I need some info ladies as I sit here crying at work...

I am 26 weeks today...I had my 1 hour glucose test last week and the OB office just called me and they said I need to go for the 3 hour test b/c the results came back on the borderline.  I came in at 140 and the cutoff is 140 and above.

I will do whatever I have to do, but I really really do not want to go thru that again, I was sick ALL day from the drink.  And having to drink it all in 5 minutes (while still being on perscription meds for my all day sickness, no way in hell do I call it morning sickness)....it was literally all I could do not to puke it back up.

So, I brought this up with the OB lady and she said I could wait and talk to the dr at my Nov 2 appt about other options since I was just at the cutoff.  She said she thinks there are other ways they may test their RnY ladies....I mean I didn't have the RnY, I had the DS, but my stomach is still small too....

Any advice....besides suck it up would be helpful.  And I am so worried, what if I do have GD...it is all I can do to eat currently....I am down 12 pounds since getting pregnant....and right now (since I got pregnant) I eat whatever I want...whatever sounds good and whatever I hope doesn't come back up.  I am just starting to get where I can stand more protein and was starting to eat even more food....but now what if I have GD and can only eat certain stuff or something...

Wow...I think this is my first big preggo breakdown....I can't stop crying.

Hi Diana,

Sorry to hear what you're going through !!  This surprises me because my weight loss surgeon told me he's never seen a DSer with GD.  He said he figured the re-arrangement of our intestines (away from the pancreas) made us not likely canidates for GD (same as for regular diabetes).

I refused the glucose test - no way I was going to get diahrea from all that sugar-crap!  Instead my doctor gave me a prescription for a glucose meter and I tested myself 2-3 times a day and kept a log - to see trends.  I tested 2 hours after meals and my sugar was ALWAYS low.  It even dipped as low as 60 one time.  (Over 120 was high)

Maybe they can get you a home-glucose meter to use ?

Good Luck!

This is the test they gave me last Saturday:

Fast for 12 hrs
9:30 am blood draw at the lab
Eat 1/2 cup cheerios in skim, banana, 1/2 cup skim, 2 pieces of white toast w/ butter and jelly.
1 hr after I finished eating another blood draw
2 hrs after I finish a final blood draw
(if required) 3 hrs after you finish eating a final blood draw

I did this at about 20 weeks and again at 30 weeks. They also sent me home w/ my own tester and I took my fasting blood sugar and then a 1 hr blood sugar once a week for 4 weeks just to ensure there were no issues. So far so good! Maybe suggest doing something like that instead of drinking that sugar drink. I hear that is horrible for post op wls people like us.

They also have a test where you get blood drawn...eat a normal balanced breakfast and then have blood drawn one hour after your last bite. Post parinial I think it is called. I second just getting a meter and testing. Some docs want 1 hour after meals, some 2. And if you do have gd it isn't the end of the world. It is just a pain in the ass. Biggest thing is to eat only good carbs with whole grains and balance that with your protein always...never eat carbs alone. Also a brisk walk, even 10-15 minutes after a meal can really help your numbers. The most important thing is to remember this is best for baby. AND...gd is not always caused by poor eating habits. Our hormones whack out when we become pg. I was able to control my levels with diet and insulin until 32 weeks...then bam....totally out of control, doing the exact same thing I was for most of my pg and struggling to get it in check. Anyway, take a deep breath. We are here to help you and you can do this one day at a time. Shari

Not sure how it works for a DSer, but my surgeon told me if they said I failed the one hour GD test, it wouldn't surprise him because when we "dump" on that sugary crap, it causes a high and then low as if we were diabetic.  If that happened, he said to tell the office to call him because they should be doing the 3 hour test on all of us.  Wonder if they should on DSers?  I know yall dont technically dump...but who knows...the rest of the process might be the same.

THANK YOU LADIES!!!  After reading this I am feeling much better...albeit pissed, but not crying, LOL.

I am pissed at myself for letting them "make" me take the glucose test....and pissed at them for not doing more research or just lumping me in with a regular pregant person.  I mean when you open my chart there is a HUGE drawing of my surgery I provided for them.

When I talked to the nurse at the OB office, she says...oh yeah...I don't think we have gastric patients do that.  No ****really.  So I will wait to talk to the dr at my next appt.

Then I called my surgeon and man do I love him and Robbie!!!  They both made me feel so much better....and Robbie was shocked that they had me do it also....said that there are other ways to test and to "gently" refuse the 3 hours test, explaining that my insides can not do that glucose drink.  So I am feeling better about things.

I guess I just freaked out b/c I have been so sick and I am so tired of people telling me I am hurting the baby b/c I have lost weight, etc, etc, etc....I think it all just hit today.  But I know that the baby is growing just fine, she looked wonderful at the 20 weeks ultrsound and was actually a few ounces ahead....so even though I am sick...she is still getting what she needs....I just need to remember that.

Thanks again everyone....and I will be taking these suggestions with me to the OB office!!
