I was on it for years before I had my surgery (once I lost the weight my blood sugars started getting too low to continue taking it) and it worked great for regulating me. Just a warning, when you start it, it can be hard on the stomach (cramps, gas and diarrhea), usually lasts about a week, ask for the extended release and it should help a bit with these issues. Good luck!
a whole bunch something with glucose?? lol sorry i dont know exactly...prior to surgery i was borderline PCOS but was on the pill and got regular periods..but prior to the pill 10 years ago my periods were horrible...! yes it prob is just taking time to regulate but she told me that she doesnt want me to go more then 2 mths without a period if there is a problem or she can give me something to get it started...
Metformin is an oral medication for diabetes. I was on it for a few years. When I got pregnant they took me off of it because it was not tested on pregnant women. The side effects on digestive. When they tried to start me on it again after my pregnancy I could not handle the side effects. I would have horrible stomach pains and diahrea for about 2 hours after taking it.
They will start you off on a minimal dose and slowly work you up to a regular dose to see if you have side effects.
The reason they would do this for PCOS is that insulin resistance is related somehow to PCOS. I was diagnosed with PCOS also. They do not know what comes first the chicken or the egg (the insulin resistance or the PCOS) but they do know that they are connected.
It is a fairly common medication and usually a starting point for oral meds for diabetes.

I have taken met for as long as I can think....I did have PCOS and knew before surgery. I still take two pills twice a day at 500mg. Here is something to consider with Met. and bypass patients....I came off the depo two years ago, in hopes to get cycles going to have a lil one. It wouldn't come, wouldn't come, etc. After my six month check up with my new dr. (I had recently moved) I realized he gave me the extended release verison of the pill, not the old verison which you have to take twice a day. After months of trying all kinds of meds to get a period....one switch to the old metformin....and like clock work...AF arrived! (Thought I would never be so happy). So, the story is...the old metformin is harder when you first start taking it (side effects); however, the extended released doesn't work in bypass patients.
Hope this helps....Stacey

I have pcos with insulin resistance and got pg 2 times using metformin to regulate my cycles. It took about 3 months for it to really get in my system and regulate my hormones for normal cycles. The other girls have mentioned the side effects. For me, they sucked...but the price I paid to get pg 2 times. Good luck. Shari
I just started taking it in August and conceived in September with the help of Follistim (injections) and IUI (intrauterine insemination). The first thing I noticed was that I needed to eat more carbs. I would get shakey, just like when you....oh I forgot the word...when we eat too much sugar and get all sick afterwards. Bottom line, I had to adjust the carb intake.
As for diarrhea, I never got that until I was pregnant!:)
