Glucose Testing after Bypass?

Hi everyone! I need some help.  I am supposed to go for glucose testing at the OBGYN in a couple of weeks.  I am afraid of dumping syndrome, but will go through with it if absolutely necessary.  The OBGYN asked me to contact my bypass surgeon for alternatives and when I called all they could tell me was that they "would not recommend the glucose testing".  No kidding!  Me neither!  So, can anyone tell me if their OBGYNs have done alternative testing for you and if so what?

Thank you so much!!!!!

I have not found that I dump and I can pack in quite a bit of sugar. Yet I still did not dare that drink. Instead my OB suggested the 2-3 hour fasting glucise tolerance test. You go in fasting (I suggest an appt first thing in the morning and nothing by mouth after midnight except plain water), they take a blood sample. Then you go out and eat as big a breakfast you can tolerate, record the time you finish eating, 2 hours later you return to lab and they take your blood again. Fasting glucose test complete. Its really not that bad or seems that long if you do other things inbetween. Like after I finished eating I had my ultrasound appt, then I saw my dr and got my flu shot. By the time I got all that done the 2 hour wait period was done.

Good luck!

My OB asked why I couldn't ( the nurse had try to give me the order nd I told her why, so she stuck a note on my chart) so when I explained to him he said ok we just won't do it. Then he ordered me a Hemaglobin A1C level and to me that seems more acurate it gives a median glucose level for the last 3 months, so thats my experience. I don't think it is "necessary" to do the test if you really feel like there is a problem try checking your sugars every so often you can get a good idea just from that. Hope that helps. I wouldn't make myself sick for that...if my OB had said we need to do it I still would have declined..they can't make you. P&PT's.

I assume you dump a lot from sugar?

I did this test.  I didn't have a problem with it.  If you are sensitive to sugar then don't do it.  If you aren't, it isn't worth the all day fasts they put you through for the other tests.  You will feel worse from not eating all day.

Frankly, I chanced 15 minutes of dumping for a days worth of feeling crappy.  I ended up fine.

Hi,

I had an IV glucose tolerance test at 18 weeks and another scheduled at 28 weeks.  I have had gestional diabetes with 2 of my previous pregnancies.  Good Luck, I know I can't drink that drink either.

Ask for the 2 hour postprandial test.   That's the fasting glucose that the previous posters are talking about.

They also drew a 6+ hour (it was more like 12 hours) postprandial test on me.

You DO NOT have to drink that crap despite how bad your OB may push you to do it.

I spoke with my OB about this just this week and she said we'll just skip it unless I exhibit signs of having GD then we'll do the blood test.

I did the fasting glucose...nothing by mouth after midnight.  I tested first thing in the morning, then 3 hrs later after eating came back for another blood draw.  Easy breezy.  Docs say that it isn't as accurate as the regular test.  But I was fine.

I argued a little bit about having it and finally gave in to take it....I did fine while there and about one hour later I had some major dumping and I don't dump that much....it came back fine....then when I went to get prepped for the c section the doc asked me was I sure I did not have gestational diabetes...I said "No, you all tested me"...and then he said sometimes the tests are not completely accurate...ugh....but anyway, all was fine with the baby.....

I vote for the other tests everyone else is mentioning.....
