I am 15 weeks prego and 1 year post Post RNY.  By the grace of god I have not gotten even a cold in a year.  Now I have a cold and am prego.  I am not sure what medication to take.  As you know, i need something sugar free and that wont affect the baby and of course that will work.  Any suggestions are welcomed.

Thanks:)

The ONLY medication that they say they know for sure for an unborn baby is Tylenol.  I do believe that you are far enough along to use something like Robitussin or benadryl...but you HAVE to ask your doctor, because I am not positive on the safety precautions of those meds.  I think you would be absolutely fine using sugar free cough drops, but you have to be careful of anything that has an antihistamine in it..antihistamine is used to "dry" things up...and you don't want anything in utero drying out.  So make sure and ask your doc before you take anything!

Feel better!!  Res****er, res****er, pee, res****er :)

Thank you so much.  I will go out to get some Tylenol.  I was not sure anyone would answer.

Of course double check with your doctor, but..

1) I hate hate hate all combo drugs.  This includes "Tylenol Cold" products.  Take the medicine you need for your symptoms.

2) The fake sudafed (pseudoephedrine) is what is in products on the shelves and is the same pregnancy class as the REAL stuff behind the counter (and the stuff that actually works).  Most OB's will okay this.  Double check with yours, and get the stuff behind the counter.

3) Afrin is considered safe for 3 days only, by most OB's.

4) Bendryl is one of the safest drugs out there.

5) Tylenol, of course.

6) Some Ob's are ok with dextramorphan (sp) as a cough suppressant.. some aren't.

So the questions become -- what's wrong.. exactly.  And of course, call your OB.

Great, thanks a bunch.   I will call my OB to double check.  It is just a little hard as they do not have many patience with bypass surgerys.

Thanks again:)

Your bypass will not affect anything at this point except "extended release" meds.

Basic rule of thumb for docs that have "little patience" for us:
1) No NSAIDs -- this only refers to a type of pain reliever
2) No extended or time-release meds

Nothing else is affected by your rearranged guts.

Docs get the wibbles too much with us.  Yeah, we need to take more vitamins, but drugs are NOT that FREAKING difficult.

Sudafed and Benadryl are on my OK list but like the other ladies said check with the Dr.
