Frenzy about lunch meat

Hi guys..

I know we all want to do what is best for our pregnancy... but this whole listeria thing and lunch meat being banned is crazy.  Listeria can come from other things, too.  Vegetables, fruits, certain cheeses.

Listeria monocytogenes is found in soil and water. Vegetables can become contaminated from the soil or from manure used as fertilizer.
Animals can carry the bacterium without appearing ill and can contaminate foods of animal origin such as meats and dairy products. The bacterium has been found in a variety of raw foods, such as uncooked meats and vegetables, as well as in processed foods that become contaminated after processing, such as soft cheeses and cold cuts at the deli counter. Unpasteurized (raw) milk or foods made from unpasteurized milk may contain the bacterium.

When I had my miscarriages I was paranoid that maybe I had contracted Listeria from something.  I had eaten an apple one day on the way home from the farm where I got it... I wiped it off but was thinking did my craving for an apple right then and there make me lose my baby?  No.  I even mentioned it to my doctor and he had said that he had never had someone in all his years miscarry from Listeria.  (Granted testing has to be run for the cause to be shown)

What I am saying is.. all the hype being placed on not eating lunch meat and its not the only thing that can cause it.  There about 2500 llisteria cases in the US yearly... among all groups of people, not just pregnant woman.

So basically, we have enough to stress us out during pregnancy... I surely am not going to make lunch meat one of them.  Especially since we can contract the bacteria from other things as well.

No need to get upset over anything... just my personal observation and opinion.

More for me then!  LOL

*munches on a hoagie*

It's not just about listeria though, it's also about eating nitrates/nitrites.   Which deli is usually loaded with unless you go to a reputable butcher or deli that makes their own product.  And when I say reputable that doesn't mean the Quick and Pick, Meijer, or some gas station that's selling deli meat.

As long as you get good quality (sorry kids, Oscar Myer and Jennie O don't cut it), get is sliced fresh, and eat it within 3 days then eat up!   You will be fine, your baby will be fine, and you will get some good protein in the process.   Think about it.  How many sandwiches have you eaten over the course of your lifetime?  How many times have you contracted Listeria from eating all those sammies?  Probably none.   It's common sense.

While we are on the subject of common sense things........   the vagina and uterus are not connected to the stomach.   Mmmmkay      :   )

You can purchase nitrate free lunchmeat.  It's a little pricier than some, but if you're concerned... by all means... spend the extra.

Thank God Julie, I was scared that the baby was floating around in the french onion soup I ate for lunch!!! =)  Bahahaha... my mind is so much more at ease now. =)

Go for it!  I had a 1/2 turkey sandwich with my french onion from Panera. =)  It was scrumptious.

Julie, are you from NJ or PA.  I don't know ANYONE who says hoagie besides people from those two states.  That's what I call it

O and Italian hoagies are the best!

No.    I'm from MI.   I just know food.    I mean a "sub" is just some vile excuse for a hoagie that comes from Subway or Quiznos.   A grinder is usually hot and not even in the hoagie family.

A hoagie is something I get from my favorite little Italian hole in the wall market.   It's loaded with prosciutto, mortadella, capacola, soprassata, onions, lettuce, provolone, etc.

Also, for those concerned, you could always heat it up, and that takes care of the problem. I'm sure it's not a cause for big concern, so I hope no one will get stressed about it. Especially with everything getting recalled now days anyway.

I agree it's probably an overblown concern.

And probably so is caffeine causing miscarriages too.

There was a lady on here when I was pregnant who lost a baby pretty far into her pregnancy to Listeria, though.  It rarely gives the mother severe symptoms and often she doesn't realize she's been infected - it can be fatal to the baby though.

Still.... I ate a few Jimmy John Gargantuans  (MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM) while pregnant, but tried to watch it.

(I also washed all fruit/veggies with soap and water before eating them - and always do)

I was 35 weeks into my 4th pregnancy and my son was stillborn due to a true knot in his cord.  Nothing I did.. nothing I knew about, it just happened.

If we live our lives in fear of the unknown it will be a pitiful existence.  I'm not saying go bungee jumping while pregnant or anything, but like Julie said... a common sense approach to most things yields a positive result.
