Article about Swine Flu Vaccine

This was in our local paper here in PA this morning. I am still on the fence. I see the OB nurse tomorrow and the OB on friday - I will discuss it with both of them. Just thought that I would share this too though,.

A health center in Berks County is among the first in Pennsylvania to receive the nasal spray version of the swine flu vaccine. Officials at Premier Urgent Care in Amity Township say the spray contains a live version of the swine flu, but it's weakened. It'll help the immune system build a resistance to the H1N1 virus.

It's different from the H1N1 vaccine, which will feature an inactivated virus. That version is expected to arrive in the next few weeks.

The first batch of the H1N1 vaccine should be going to high priority patients, but the flu mist cannot be administered to one target group and that's pregnant women. They're being encouraged to get vaccinated against both the seasonal flu and the swine flu, but they'll have to wait for the shots, which don't contain the live virus.

>> DR. DOMINIC CAMMARANO: We asked for 500. We're not sure if we're going to get them.

>>REPORTER: Or when. It's new territory for Reading OB/GYN.. where.. for years.. doctors have recommended its patients get the flu shot but have never offered it before.

>> CAMMMARANO: Our pregnant patients are asking for it, when is it coming, we want it. Which is good because in the past we've had to fight to convince women that it's safe but I think things are different this time around.

>> REPORTER: What may be different is the advent of H1N1. The Centers for Disease Control suggest pregnant women are 4 times as likely to be hospitalized from it than other flu sufferers.

>> CAMMARANO: A disproportionate number of young women have died from this flu and they all seem to be pregnant..

>> DR. ELIZABETH DIERKING: We've got potentially early warning of this and can maybe do something that no one's ever had a chance to do in the past.

>> REPORTER: But even with the recommendations In years past.. only a small percentage of pregnant women have actually gotten a flu shot. It could be over fear of what's in it. Doctors we spoke with say there will be a mercury-free version of the H1N1 vaccination available.

>> DIERKING: The sooner you get it.. the sooner your body forms resistance to the flu and the more protected you are during flu season.

>> REPORTER: Many pregnant women are still concerned there hasn't been enough testing of the H1N1 vaccine. The CDC says it's been developed the same way as the seasonal flu shot. The debate is likely to continue.

Hmmm interesting. I am in PA (Sunbury region...not far from Danville) and we have only had one "case"...was never confirmed and released...of swine flu so far. However, my University recieved the nasal spray last Friday and are administering it today, tomorrow, and thursday. Obviously I cant get the nasal spray vaccine, but it doesnt matter because I am not going to get any swine flu vaccine. I dont feel comfortable with it or trust it. My OB did beg me to get the seasonal at least so I got that last week. I am willing to take my risk rather than birthing a baby with 3 arms or some underlying health concern (I know I am overdoing it on worry).

My Uncle used to  live in Sunbury - I know where that is!

I won't be getting the swine flu shot (as of this moment) but I am considering the regular one.

Thats amazing. No one has ever heard of Sunbury unless they live in the area or use Geisnger Hospital in Danville. That is soooo cool lol.
