getting & staying preg questions...
WLS doesn't have anything to do with your reproductive system as far as making the baby and sustaining it. Usually issues will arise if you get pg too soon after surgery because you can't get enough calories in to help the baby grow. The thing to remember is that generally the baby takes what it needs from you (nutrition and vitamins) and you have to be really careful to be diligent in your eating and supplements so that you will not suffer. The miscarriages are just an unfortunate coincidence.
On the upside there are so many of us here that were never able to conceive before wls and now are pg or have babies. WLS can help your hormones tremendously and help to regulate ovulation and cycle length. That was me. Surgery can really help some with fertility. It took me 5 years and wls to get pg with my daughter and 13 months to get pg with my son.
Are you thinking of ttc soon?? Shari

All of my MCs (4) have been post WLS. There's no connection thought to be to the WLS...the drs think they're more than likely because my hormones (estrogen AND progesterone) are out of whack - which I assume is because of my age but am not sure (I'll be 42 in March).

thanks ladies for answering me. i am new to the wls. i dont plan on having a baby soon but i was wondering if it would be okay if it just happened before my 1 year anniversary and if miscarriages came from getting preg after wls. blessings to each of you ladies and your babies on earth and in heaven.
Dr's recommend 12-24 months post op before trying to get pregnant so that your body has a chance to loose a majority of the weight and get everything stabilized. My surgeon told me once everything had leveled out for 6 months we could start trying. We started TTC at 2 years post op. I Went off my birth control pills in January, conceived in April, had a miscarriage in June (it was a blighted ovum - genetic material was missing so the baby never formed - totally un-WLS related). Was given the go ahead again in July and got pregnant in August! I am now 8 weeks pregnant and we had a good strong heartbeat.
Good luck with your journey!

I never have had any babies after WLS...I was a lucky overweight woman that was so fertile if I looked cross-eyed at a penis I got pregnant. I did, however, have 3 miscarriages...2 singleton miscarriages around 6-8 weeks and then a twin miscarriage at 16 weeks...that one was pretty difficult for me to swallow. I was so excited about having twins, but it just was not meant to be. I have been told after each of my miscarriages that I did nothing wrong, that miscarriages are just natures' way of taking care of babies that are not forming correctly and would not be healthy when born. Still a hard pill to swallow, didn't help with the guilts of did I do something wrong, etc....but there ya go...that is what I was told.
Good luck when you try to conceive. I really do not think there have been any real studies done to see if the percentages are higher for miscarriages before or after weight loss surgery. Maybe one of these research hospitals should start one :)

Mom of 8 health children...ages 22 to 7 (7 girls and 1 boy)...yep...the boy was the last one...go figure! Having buyers remorse right now for having made the decision to have my tubes tied, but know in my heart of hearts that with all of my health issues...the LAST thing I need is to be having a baby....I may some day look into doing foster care for infants or even adoption...but right now I have to concentrate on getting healthy..btw...weight holding steady at 102.6...so I am happy as a little clam to weigh over 100 pounds!

I was 12 months out and at goal for 3 before I got pregnant...I wasn't planning to start my fertiity treatments up agian quite yet but "it" happened on it's own. So far I am having a perfect preganncy after 7 years of TTC with no success. But, with PCOS (which is a problem for several of us here), the problem is usually conceiving not carriage. For that, WLS does wonders....at least for me and several of us. Like the other posters said, as long as your far enough out and your weight is stabe, WLS can generally only help. I think the MC rate is also because people either already have fertility issues or because they are older and the MC rate is higher as a rule for women past 35. Actually, the ideal age for conception is around 18...to bad our brains are not usually there at that point.
subnote- There is also the fact that 1:3 normal preganacies end in MC. Generally it just happens so soon people don't know and mistake it for a bad period. Women here though are so diligently checking though that they are often aware of their preganacy from the get go.
