Do any of you who are pregnant/ have been pregnant eat cold cold cuts?

This whole cold cut thing has been the hardest for me.  I haven't eaten any, just in hot paninis, but tomorrow we are going apple/pumpkin picking and we usually pack a lunch.  I reallyyyy want an Italian sub.  I prob wont end up getting it I'm just whining, but I just wanted to ask...

Do you eat cold cuts?

I mean, I do not see a problem with it, as long as they are from a real deli (not subway) that refrigerates and slices their own meat.  This cold cut thing is a relatively new rule for pregnancy.  My mom and aunts had never heard of it before.

It makes you wonder how WE all got here safe and alive!!!

Thanks
Karen

I did sneak a Jimmy John's sub once or twice while pregnant....shame on me!

The fear is Listeria which is more rare in this country than in Europe where they routinely test pregnant women for the bacteria.  (It can cause little or no symptoms in the mom but damage or kill the baby)

The solution is to heat meat up TO STEAMING.  (Most panini's the meat is barely warm -- not steaming certainly!).

Although this is a solution I still craved non-warmed up cold cuts....and after giving birth I had my husband go to the deli and get me a big ham-and-cheese!!  LOL.

You're also supposed to avoid soft cheese, sausages and hotdogs (unless cooked to steaming) and smoked fish (unless part of a casserole where it's cooked).

From Subway you can have meatball subs, subs with chicken breast and their steak subs.... I ate those whle pregnant.  (Oh and tuna in moderation).

I'm sure the chances of getting listeria is small.....like you said we all survived.  But I figured it was better safe than sorry.

(same with caffeine)

To be honest I ate anything I wanted including cold cuts. I ate them from subway, from the deli and I had a few Italian grinders. I don't believe all the non sense about food so I do what I want. That's just me though

I think everyone should do whatever it is they believe is right for them. That being said...I had 8 babies, and ate whatever and drank whatever I wanted with the exception of alcohol.  That was the only thing I did abstain from during pregnancy.   I'm not a big drinker anyway, so it was not a real sacrifice.  I also, with my last pregnancy, was given more drugs than you would think would have killed an elephant.  I had HELLP syndrome and was in the hospital for 5 weeks before I delivered my son at 31 weeks. I could not BELIEVE the amounts of meds they gave me while I was in there...it was staggering.  I was given sleeping meds each night on top of 5 different BP meds antibiotics, pain meds for liver pain...you name it...they gave it to me.  I was really in disbelief considering I barely took a Tylenol with any of my previous pregnancies without consulting my OB first.

The only other rule I stuck through during pregnancy was I did nothing with the cat box.  That was mostly because I was glad I finally got a break from that duty...not because I was afraid of catching anything...lol   I mean...I don't clean the cat box with my bare hands and then go eat a sandwich and lick my fingers...so I really doubt I would catch anything from the cat box...but I let my hubby think I was terrified of it...lmao

I hope you find a happy medium for yourself and that you have ahappy and healthy baby :)

Hugs!

I ate them. This was a new rule by my 5th pregnancy. So I figured if I ate it before....I would now.

When life hands you lemons, ask for tequila & salt and give me a call!

I don't eat much for cold cuts just because I don't think I am far enough post op yet so I can't chew a sub up well enough yet but I have eaten cold cuts (hat, turkey, summer sausage) w/ cheddar on ritz and stuff like that w/ out worry! I've also eaten quite a few Lunchables. I honestly wouldn't worry about it!! That's just me tho.
