My doc's view on theH1N1 vaccine... and u/s pic!

So I'm 13 wks now and had an u/s today.   The baby was kicking and moving all around and it was good to see and hear the heartbeat!   This pic isn't the greatest, but the head is on the left and body on the right.   The legs and arms are curled in, so it just looks like a head and a body, lol!

Anyways, I asked my doc about the H1N1 vaccine and he said he wants me to get it.   He said if I normally get the flu shot, to get that too.   He said he just had a patient that was 28 weeks pregnant that had the swine flu and she was in the hospital for a MONTH.   He said she was on a ventilator and was really sick.

He said the benefits outweigh the risks and I'm just not sure about it still.  I want the peace of mind of having me and the baby be healthy and guaranteed to not get the swine flu if I get the vaccine.   But I don't want to be way paranoid and risk the chance of getting it- and being in the hospital like this lady was.  I have a son in 1st grade and he's around kids all day with the germs and then my hubby is in sales and is shaking a lot of people's hands.   So if they bring something home with them, I'm screwed!

My doc said that the vaccine will probably be available in about 2 weeks and to tell the place I'm going to that I'm preggo (so I'm guaranteed the shot because I'm in a high risk category).   I'm 70% sure that I want to get it, but still a little doubt if it's safe or not for my baby.   If I wasn't pregnant, I wouldn't even be considering getting it!   *sigh*

congrats on the great appt!!!

I am curious to hear what my OB has to say about it when I see her. My PCP was on the fence about it because of my situation - I work in an office with about 15 people and I am the only one that touches my phone, computer etc. We all purell everything and use clorox to clean the bathroom and clorox wipes to clean the copiers. I spray my phone with alcohol at least once a week and lysol the keyboard and door knobs.

I saw my PCP a week ago for my six month check up (he requires to refill my metformin and B12 shot).  He told me it was very important that I get both flu shot and H1N1 shot.  Like your dr. mentioned the risk outweight getting the flu.  I have mine scheduled for 10/22 when I go back for my Flu and monthly B12.

Hope this insight helps....Stacey

My OB also told me I "had" to get it. She said that it was a much safer alternative than getting the swine flu. Now, my 9 year old has gotten sick and was diagnosed with the swine flu, and I was treated with Tamiflu just to make sure I didn't get it. I will be getting the vaccine as soon as the health dept has it in.

I will be getting it too. My doctor said that pregnant when do not do well with the H1N1. I feel like it is the safest thing to do. I couldn't stand the thought of leaving my children behind, all because I was afraid to get a vaccine.

Congrats on 13 weeks....wooo hooo...time is flying, huh? :) I am sure it was fun to see the baby moving all around :) CONGRATS....

Although I am not PG, I have high recommendations to get both too...I usually get the flu shot one anyway....and I have been recommended by Nathan's pedi and his pulmonologist to get both because of his resperatory issues he has....I do not want to risk anything so he will be getting both too....I need to get things spread out though since his one year shots are right around the corner too....

Christy-
I love sonograms!! Too bad you don't know what it is yet. I am TTC, have already gotten my seasonal flu shot, and intend to get the H1N1, because I work retail and who knows what comes in the door! I have bad asthma too, so I count even if I'm not expecting at the point (Although I hope to be). Thanks for the update! I think getting the vaccine is fine. I think that, if you're still nervous, maybe wait a week or so after they arrive. You know the news here in SLC jumps all over this stuff, and I think we'll hear of any complications or problems with the vaccine really quickly.
