Which Vitamin D do you take?

My surgeon and OB want me to take 50,000 IU of Vitamin D per week.  I was looking at Vitalady.com and there are so many to choose from.   Those of you that have to supplement your Vit. D, which do you take?  Thanks so much.

ETA - I have had a different surgery than you (probably) so mine is daily....not weekly. OB and surgeon okayed me taking high does during pregnancy.

I take Vitalady's dry vitamin D -- I usually buy the VitaLady brand - 50,000 IU pills.  I accidently bought the 5,000 IU pills so I have to take 10 of them a day! (ugh).

Good news is they are small and easy to swallow !

I also supplement A & E (two other fat soluable) so I take a "dry" ADE as well... which makes my total D for the day about 70,000 IU.

Take Care!

Cindy

Hi Cindy

I think I remember you saying once that you have the DS. I am looking into a revision from RNY to DS. Obviously the DS worked for you, you look stunning. Would you recommend this? Any special reason you picked this procedure among others?

Hey There,

I did a TON of research before having WLS.  I so totally did not want to even risk "dumping"  (Haven't we punished ourselves enough over our weight all these years?  Dumping just seems like more negative reinforcement!).  I was concerned about the way the RNY bypasses the "normal" stomach and makes a pouch.... that normal stomach still sits inside you and is "blind" .  Meaning cancer, ulcers, etc can be growing in there without any easy way to scope it - since it's not connected to the digestive tract.  I was young - 28 - and didn't want a blind stomach inside me.

The DS gives me a full functioning (just smaller) stomach - with a pyloric valve that works -- so digestion begins in my stomach (less protein malabsorption and B12 problems) and since the valve prevents undigested food from dumping into my intestines I don't have "dumping" AND I can drink with my meals!

My intestines were rearranged to bypass the part that absorbs fats.... which means 70-80 percent of the fats I eat are not absorbed.  (bring on the mayo and butter!)   That also means 70-80% of the fat soluable vitamins I ingest are not absorbed.

DSers do take more vitamins.....  ADEK especially.  We have simiiar iron issues to RNYers and are equally committed to putting protein first and simple carbs last.  Of course yearly blood tests are needed -- by both RNYers and DSers to keep tabs on vitamin levels.

No WLS is a magic bullet -- but the DS does offer the best chances of long term weight loss.   I do get gassy if I eat too many carbs (a box of Pop Tarts will KILL me gas wise!)  and it took a year of low carb to lose my weight --- before I added carbs back in to maintain.

I hope that helps....  There are a lot of revisions on the DS board you can talk to!

I have struggeled with vitamin d since having surgery and more so while pg. I was taking a prescribed d-2, oil based 50,000 once a week with not much improvement at all. I talked to my peri and we decided to try the vitalady 50,000 d-3 50 dry and within a month my levels were much better. Good luck. Shari

Thank you all.  I ordered what Cindy suggested and will start them as soon as they arrive.  They want me to do a bone density scan after I deliver to keep an eye on this.
