Pregnancy after WLS

I recently went off my birth control pill because I am trying to get pregnant.  I know that as soon as you stop taking the pill your body starts to return to the normal cycle within 24 hours (Dr. told me this).  I was just wondering a few things about the differences between a post WLS patient  versus a normal pregnant woman.  I eat pretty normal but just smaller portions than I could before.  I am 3 years post op so I can eat quite a bit so getting enough nutrition to the baby is not a problem.  Is a prenatal vitamin needed or do I just need to take my multivitamin, calcium, iron, and B-12?  Do I need to add folic acid to my vitamins?  I use Celebrate brand.  Also is there anything different that we must do?  Do I need to see a high risk OBGYN?  Any comments about trying to get pregnant or being pregnant after WLS are appreciated.

I am taking prenatals and seeing a reg ob. I will prolly be consided high risk but not cause of WLS. I would suggest trying to find someone that has experience with WLS patience.

I was told by my OB that it can take up to 3 months for your body to regulate after being on a BC pill. You should switch to a prenatal and add in folic acid.

My OB set the reccomendations of 2000 calories, 90 grams of protein and 100 grams of carbs for when you do get pregnant and y ou will probably be sent to a high risk OB as well just to err on the safe side.

Happy TTC!

I had been on the pill for 18 yrs.  I was only off the pill one month and got pregnant!  needless to say I was extremely shocked....I wasnt expecting it to happen so fast....but I had started taking extra folic acid beforehand.....now I'm doing the prenatals along with my normal b12, calcium etc...

I was never sent to a high risk ob, not when I was only 4 months post op and pregnant, and not with the twin pregnancy - but others have!  So, it's all up to the OB you pick and what they wanna do with ya.  ;-)
I just switched to a prenatal and added folic acid - I did this because of the twins, not with my singleton, I continue to take my B12 and an iron pill.  I can eat pretty well these days myself!  LOL.  Oddly, I gained 50 lbs when I was only eating 900-1000 calories a day.  Now that I've upped those calories considerably, I've only gained 27 so far and it's twins!  Go figure.  HA.

Good luck to you!!

I am seeing my regular Ob/Gyn for this pregnancy.  My bariatric doc said to just add a prenatal vitamin and 800 mcg of folic acid to my vitamin regimen (I take a chewable centrum, 1000 mcg of sublingual b12's, and 1800 mg of CC a day in addition to the prenatal and folic acid).   I also to have a blood test every 3 months to check vitamin levels.   I will do a fasting blood test (or some sort of blood test) instead of the normal sugary drink they have you drink (and then a blood test) at around 7 months for gestational diabetes too.

I don't see a reason why you'd need to see a high risk ob/gyn unless you are older in age or have problems in your pregnancy where you'd need to be monitored more.   GL!

Hit goal weight of 140 at 13 months out from RNY!! 130 pounds GONE!

Some people do take pre-natal vits...I don't.  My dr looked at my vitamins and said they were sufficient - I take Bariatric Advantage.  I'd just say make sure your labs are in order...maybe up the folic acid a little (my dr told me that's one that you can't 'od' on...and due to my history of mc and issues related to that...I take 5,600 mg of folic acid a day - normal I think is around 400-800?) just to be on the safe side...and then when you get pg, have your dr monitor your levels.  It seems reading here that the things that get out of whack the quickets would be the iron & D vits.

Good luck.  I hope we read about a BFP from you soon.
