I am almost 10 weeks pregnant. I havent had an ultrasound or even heard a hearbeat yet. I went in for my last visit on Monday and my doctor says, its nothing to worry about but we wanna send you to see a high risk doctor because of your bypass surgery. Was just wondering if anyone else had to because of their bypass?
There have been a few here that see a high risk doctor, but most ob's can handle it. A lot of times they just have you see a nutritionist and it will be important to keep up on your labs to make sure your levels aren't dropping. Then there is a special test to take when testing for gestational diabetes because a lot of us can't handle the sugar drink they give you. I understand maybe your concern about having to see a high risk doctor, but I think it is cool. You will have more opportunities to see baby and they for sure will monitor you closely. My first pg I saw an OB, this one a specialist...but I am older this time and have diabetes...it isn't because of the wls. Anyway, good luck, and keep us posted. Shari
I am staying with my regular OB but they are sending me to a high risk OB to meet with him a couple times.

Nope, not when I got pregnant 4 months post-op and not with the twins. I had "healthy" pregnancies (had issues NOT related to WLS) and my OB's have both said I'm better off than most of their patients that HAVEN'T had the surgery. I just went to my surgeon a few times with my last pregnancy so he was still doing my labs and was happy with them.
I wouldn't have minded going to a high risk OB though. I think you get to see your baby a little more often!!

No. This is my frist pg and I was only a year out but everytime I see my OB he says I am doing perfectly and to stay the course. My only concern thusfar was about weightgain and my lack thereof but that has finally started coming on and I'm up 5lbs at 5 months. Still, I think it certainly can't hurt to see the high risk guy. You can only get better care! Do you have an US scheduled for 12 weeks? That was my first real one. Good luck.

Yes-I went to high risk with my daughter- I got freq. u/s to check her growth, plus extra nutritional counseling (if I wanted it). My high risk Dr's ruled! I would not have traded them for the world. One has a specialty in exercise - so he kept on me to keep healthy. They were very pleased with me and my daughters growth. I went back this pregnancy and two visits in they fired me. LOL so I had to go to intermediate care...I HATE THEM! They are opinionated, rude, and I never see the real Dr- only the interns, med students, etc. I am sure hoping I have a good Dr for my c-section. Every time I go to have an u/s (right next to high risk) I tell the girls- how much I hate the other place. But I have found that most other OB office have between 10-14 Dr's that you rotate with...no thanks to that either. I loved my high risk MFM- the other patients there were ummm....less then desirable too (most of them were non compliant diabetics that sat and ate candy bars in the waiting room and complained about how much weight they gained, how they didn't understand why they had to check their BS and why the BP was high or the Amish girls that would come in with 5 kids and looked like they were 15). HELLO? ! So maybe its a good thing I wasn't there this whole time,...because I probably would have had to "check" at least one of them by now.
I am almost 10 weeks also and will be seeing a high risk OB (unless they see a reason to change it). In fact, I have 2 drs. My reasons though are because I was less than 4 months out from surgery when I got pregnant and because they said they worry about my vitamin levels and my eating scedule. But hey, I look at this as a good thing. As a high risk, I see have ONLY 2 drs I can see at each appt (not sometimes a midwife or dr. or intern), my u/s will be more frequent, I get free nutritional counseling, and yea did I mention I get to actually KNOW my drs. So I am taking it as I get more love.

No, but they may as well have! I currently have 35 (YES 35!!) appointments in the books and I only have 3 short months left in my pregnancy!! They want me to come in weekly and also see a Nut monthly and have level 2 u/s every 6 weeks and once I get to 32 weeks they are giving level 1 u/s weekly. It's insane and I pray my work doesn't fire me for it! Thank God for FMLA!
