Breastfeeding Woes....

Ok, first off it does sound like a bad latch. Have you watched any video's or seen a lactation consultant? If you go to the La Leche League website you should be able to find someone in your area to talk to so that you can improve her latch and get things moving in the right direction.

Now to heal your nipples will be a little harder, and you are just going to have to tough it out for a bit while they heal. Get yourself a good breast cream, don't skimp here and try to go with the cheaper stuff because it won't give you the healing that you need.

After each feeding you should hand express a small amount of breastmilk and use a clean finger to cover the nipple completely with this milk, let it air dry. Do not wipe your nipples with anything and leave them exposed as long as you can. Once the milk dries completely apply a good breast cream liberally and do this at EVERY feeding, even if she is only on for a minute or two. When you take a shower DO NOT use soap on or near your nipples, it will dry them out making it harder to heal. Just let warm (not hot) water run over them and again let them air dry, do not dry with a towel and again express a small amount of milk, rub it over and apply cream.

You may want to consider a nipple shield while you heal. If this is really important to you, you need to contact a lactation consultant as they can be much more help them someone over the internet can be. I would not suggest pumping or giving bottles at this time until you talk to an LC as that could just make everything worse for you.

I hope this has helped and I hope you can find help IRL, BFing is hard but it is so worth the effort.

I had what sounds like the same problem.  I wasn't getting enough areola in her mouth when baby nursed and it was very painful.  The advice I was given that worked was pinch down on the outer part of your areola and when baby opens her mouth put as much as you can in and then release your areola and you should get a good latch.  Hope this helps it worked so well for me that  I breastfed for 2 and a half years lol.
