excess saliva and the ability to throw up

I dont know if either of these are related to each other or even to the RNY I had but I would like the input of you ladies.

Lately I feel like I am drowning in my own saliva. I seem to be producing massive amounts and I don't know what to do with it. If I swallow it, I feel worse and a need to puke. So the only thing that I can do is spit it out...but this is not a very attractive thing to be doing except in the confines of my own home. Does anyone else have this problem or had this problem and how did you rectify it? Or am I the only weirdo?

Next problem is the actual ability to throw up. Recently on different occasions my morning sickness has turned from just nausea to throwing up. But nothing ever comes up but maybe some spit or phlegm never food(sorry ladies, I know bad image). Is this a common problem after RNY? Am I forever doomed to throw up without relieving the problem? HELP!!!

First of all the saliva thing from what I have heard is TOTALLY normal. I find myself drooling at night now - attractive huh? I was just reading last night about the saliva contributing to the MS too.

SOunds like you have the foamies - how your stomach reacts to food it isn't happy with. I get the same thing.

Hope you are feeling better soon

Thank God the salvia thing is normal. Now if only I could find a remedy cause I am going insane.

I dont think its the foamies cause its happened twice after brushing my teeth. I doubt I could be having a reaction to my toothpaste...or could I???

But thanks for the good wishes. I hope I feel better soon cause I am miserable and I just found out I have bronchitis.

Try a different kind of toothpaste and see if that helps.  When I was pg w/my son 14+ years ago (pre-WLS), I couldn't use Colgate toothpaste - I had to switch to Crest - which I despise - because it was the only one I could brush my teeth with w/o hurling.  I mentioned it to the nurse in my OB/GYN's office...she said she had experienced the same thing.

Hope your feeling better soon (re the bronchitis and the MS)...and that this stage of your pregnancy passes quickly.

sorry you have Bronchitis.   I found out I had Bronchitis when I was like 8 wks pg with my 2nd child- finally went in when I had been coughing my head off for 2 weeks and was really sick!  I had to take a really strong antibiotic and a super strong cough medicine so I could even sleep at night (coughing would keep me up half the night!!).  Hope you get better soon!

The throwing up thing is like me.    When I do throw up, it's just spit or phlegm or a teeny bit of food.   NOTHING like pre op when I threw up.   I count it as a blessing that it's better now when I throw up post op!!!   I one time threw up about 5 minutes after I ate 3/4 piece of whole wheat bread and barely any of it came up!   I was like wow, pre op I would've thrown up whatever I ate.   And I have never thrown up pre op until now when I am pg.

The toothpaste thing is probably just you being gaggy cuz you're pregnant (and sticking the toothbrush in there is making  you gag?).   I had to actually switch over to a kid's bubblegum flavored toothpaste with my 2nd pregnancy because they mint made me gag!  lol

As for the excess saliva, I found this article on babycenter.com that might help you.

I really wish I could throw up naturally. I am unable to and so I am nauseous all day long! Eat food or don't eat food it doesn't matter. Puking would be nice then I might feel a sense of accomplishment from all the misery!

It's common that you don't actually throw-up.  It's because your food is passing through your stomach to quickly.  So it very common.  I find when I so feel sick enough that I feel like I am going to it just drive heeves...That's the stomach reacting but nothing in it.  Eating nearly hour to hour 1/2 (fruits, small snacks) has helped me from feeling sick.  Also, I have noticed my ability to hold sugar (even amounts I could before pg) are not so good and typically will be my problem.
As far as salvia, very common at this stage of the game.

Good luck...Stacey
