Stupid question: Am I overfeeding my little one?
Last week I had to buy a new canister of formula as the sample one I received had run out. I bought the canister on Monday. it was 728g or roughly 25oz of Similac Advanced. During the week, my LO began cluster feeding and by this weekend I had hardly any formula left. Now, I'm aware that I've probably been wasting at least 4-6 oz a day with him not drinking the full amount I prepared since you can really only prepare 2oz at a time.
However, this morning I woke up after his nighttime feedings and came downstairs to notice that I'm going to be opening the next canister of formula tonight. We went through the whole can! He woke up at 2:30am, 6am,and then 9am and ate 3 oz each feeding. Plus had about 3 1/2 oz at 10:30pm.
I was told that babies at this age are driven by their hunger and they won't eat unless they are hungry so I've been feeding on demand. Is this wrong? Is he eating too much? Am I making him fat like I was?!!
Oh and since a post is normally worthless without pics... Here he is on his 2 week birthday!

so he ate 3 times over night and once at 10:30. how many other times did he eat?
I'm a firm believer in on demand feeding so I'd be doing what you are doing and feeding him when he is hungry.
you CAN put formula in the fridge made up and ready if you want. you just cannot reuse formula that he has drank from.
have you tried just 2 oz at a time to see if he is satisfied or is he clear that he wants/needs 3 oz at a time?
he might be going through a growth spurt as well.
adding...a can a week isn't abnormal. I know that Kaida was doing at least that once we did formula at 3 months. I was going through the 9 cans from wic and still buying 2 or more myself before the end of the month.

During the cluster feeding I was only preparing 2oz at a time because I wanted to make sure he wanted more, and he was eating about every 2 hours 2-3oz for about 2 1/2 days like that. As of yesterday and today he is back to sleeping most of the time during the day, basically eating 3-4oz every 3-4 hours.
My 5 week almost 6 week old eats on demand and it is about 4-6 oz every 3 hours. Sometimes she will have 2oz at 1pm and want 2 more an hour later then sometimes she will want the 4 altogether. Even when she does the 4 altogether she sometimes wants another ounce 2 hours later. I just feed her when she is chewing on her hand or rooting for a nipple. So far no problem and I did this with DD #1 and she was a little chubster but thinned out after 10 months old when we stopped formula.
Where does your LO sleep at night? The only place mine will sleep is in the cradle swing or on her tummy. But when she gets up for night time feeding it takes about 1/2 hr to feed then sometimes she does not go back to sleep right away. Do you rock him to sleep or put him down right when your done feeding? She wakes up every 2 1/2 - 3 hours and I am exhausted.

He sleeps in the bassinet right beside the bed. I unwrap his swaddling blanket to change and then feed him and it typically takes about 30 minutes to feed him and then I re-swaddle him and he is practically asleep during this process and I put him directly into the bassinet again. I also don't turn on a light in the bedroom. I use the glow of a light from another room because I don't want him to think it's daytime and "awake" time.
I so cannot believe he is 2 weeks old already...OMG....but he is ADORABLE...I love his little outfits...I too believe in on-demand feeding at that age. Given this is my first one, that is what I was told by many including my pedi. Also, I would not make excess so you are wasting it. Some people make a pitcher to be used in a 24 hour period and pour what you need. I would just make the bottle the bare min and if I needed to do more then I would make a little more. Also, one other tip I did was feed him a little more right before you go to bed (maybe the 1030 feeding). He may end up sleeping longer if his tummy is fuller. :)
Thanks again for the pics...he is so adorable!!!!! What is his name again?
