Protein ideas

The thought of eating meat right now is revolting. I finally broke down and got chicken wings for lunch because I haven't eaten meat in days and I know I'm not getting squat for protein. With no fill in my band I was able to eat 3.5 good sized wings over the course of 3 hours (nibbling at my desk). Healthy protein sounds gross... these chicken wings were barely tolerable and I used to love them.

Drinking a protein shake doesn't sound too good either. Milk hasn't been sitting well so that fact alone is keeping me off the shakes.

I've been drinking smoothies with yogurt in them but that's not much protein.

I need some ideas on non-meat and non-milk protein (if they actually exist lol). No protein bullets, just the thought of those things is nauseating.

TIA!

Try soy and beans. Edemame is my personal fav. Soy burgers are decent but when I was preggers it turned my tummy. All I wanted was chicken and I usually can't eat that. I use soy milk all the time since I don't tolerate milk too well. Good luck.

Almost forgot. Quinua (I think that's how it's spelled) is a grain that's considered a protein. Never had it but I hear it's good.

I shall now be know as Hagatha: Queen of the queens.

I can't tolerate liquid protein shakes or the drink an ounce of any protein liquid.  To get my protein in, I eat low fat cheese, I do eat yogurt sometimes, cottage cheese, have protein bars (snicker low carb Marathon are my favorite), south beach peanut butter ones, met rx (I think that's the name) have a yummy few.  I also can't stomach to bars that taste like protein supplements like most Adkins bars or GNC type ones.  If I can smell that protein additive I am done.  I have a very hard time with meats this pregnancy- I thought by now it would resolve...NOPE...So I have added some fatty proteins - peanut butter back into my diet.  I have been able to tolerate lunch meat (weird) which I heat, and turkey peperoni.  But if you put a hamburger or a steak in front of me I turn green.  Hey - do peanut butter cups count?!  Good luck- it will all balance out.

I am not the biggest health food person ever but I really like the veggie burgers and breakfast links from Morningstar. I believe they are made with soy but I can't really taste it and I like the burgers as a sandwhich for lunch as well as with my eggs (can you eat eggs) in the morning for a double dose of protein.

This is exactly how I felt!! I had such a hard time my entire 1st trimester because I couldn't stomach most meats just because of the chewing and milk just grossed me out!! It's a million times better now but it was rough for a while. I went thru phases on what I could tolerate. I ate a lot of cheese, yogert, & crackers w/ cheese and meat. I also had eggs like everyday! 7g per egg and I add 1/4 c cheese so that = 14g of protein. That saved me! 1 tbls of peanut butter = 4g. 1oz of nuts = 4 g. so there are a few snackable items you might be able to try. I ended up giving up on "healthy" protein and just ate whatever protein I could stomach that day. Good luck and I hope this phase fades for you quick!!

I remember having this problem as well. When I talked to my NP at my surgeon's office (who's also a part-time L&D nurse) she told me to just get down what I could and not to worry too much about healthy vs. unhealthy protein. Some was better than none. I got over that by my second trimester and was able to eat healthy protein again... except for shakes. (Just the thought of one, well...) Hope you feel better soon!

I am in the same boat as you, just the thought of it and I feel green. Thanks for asking the question and I hope one of these ideas works for you and me.

my favorite protein is cheese. I eat string cheese, or pepper jack cheese. I also will melt the cheese on a corn tortilla and put a little salsa, and you know the pre cooked strips of chicken meat you can buy in the store...I put a couple strips of those too. I also do peanut butter on a graham and just load up the pb. GL Shari
