I was wondering if anyone could tell me which surgery is better for after pregnancy,,,,,For example: I know for lap Band once I get prego they can take out the silicone and then refill once I deliver baby for weight loss,,,,But I dont know if weightloss is the same after pregnancy for Gastric,,, can anyone help??? I have not decided on the surgery yet, but I was approved,,, This will most likely make my decision,,,,, I am open to suggestions and help,, Thanks!

I think it really depends on the individual more than the type of surgery.  I've seen great results and poor results after both.  You are right, they usually remove the saline from the band when you are pregnant and then will re-fill it after baby is born.  You don't have that with RNY.

I think depending on how much you need to lose and your current health should help you decide what kind of surgery to have.  Good luck!

I had Lapband surgery in April 09. I've lost a little over 70 lbs and am 8 weeks pregnant. I was at 8cc's and after I found I was pregnant my surgeon took out 1.5 cc's so now I'm at 6.5. I'm still a little tight and have a hard time eating dense protein so I'm going back tomorrow to have a little more taken out.

My surgeon said he won't completely empty my band during pregnancy, he'll just remove whatever is necessary to keep my comfortable and able to intake enough calories without gaining or losing too much.

I like the flexibility of the Lapband in that way, that I can work with my surgeon to make sure that I can eat enough, but not TOO much and we can keep a close tabs on my weight. I don't want to diet during pregnancy, but I don't want to gain 50 lbs either!

I also only had a little fluid removed from my band while pregnant. It helped me control my pregnancy weight gain and now, 2 months later, I am 10 lbs below my pre-pregnancy weight.

Banded 03/22/06  276/261/184 (highest/surgery/lowest)

Sleeved 07/11/2013  228/165 (surgery/current) (111lbs lost)

I also have only had a little fluid removed from my band, just enough to keep me able to eat comfortably. I've gained 23 lbs, the majority of which came at about month 8 and I'm okay with that. I wanted to keep the gain between 25 and 30 lbs. I'm sure it's a  bummer with either surgery to see the scale creep up although you know it's for a good reason. But I know that after the baby gets here (hopefully within 6 days) I'll be able to have my band refilled and get right back on track.
