I was at work - not far from NYC we watched the entire thing unfold on TV then drove up to a high hill nearby and could see the smoke black and stark as anything against a perfectly blue cloudless sky.

THe strangest thing was seeing no planes in the sky...

I was in The Bronx, NY. We were living in Ukraine at the time and had come back to NY on our R&R trip, staying w/a friend in The Bronx.

My friend had gone to work - about 5 blocks away from the WTC - and her mom called her home and asked if I could try to call her.  Her mom said that they were saying on the news that an airplane had hit the WTC and she couldn't get through to make sure she was OK.  I was thinking a little two person private plane some how managed to take a 'wrong turn' and ran into the building.  I called and left a voice mail message for my friend, then called another friend who sat next to her and left a # on her voice mail telling her to tell the first friend to call her mom.

My friend's remote control is retarded and deprograms itself, so it wasn't working.  My family and I were getting dressed to go to Maryland for the last four days of our R&R, and at first I wasn't going to bother with watching the news...then figured I'd find out what was up while my husband took a shower..turned on the cable from the box and found the Spanish news.  I saw both buildings on fire and yelled to my my DH 'Oh ****something did happen!' and flipped for an English channel.

Once I found one - I think it was NY 1 I found - I kept reading the headlines on the bottom of the screen, listening to what they were saying...but in my mind kept repeating the question...'How could ONE little plane cause THAT much damage to BOTH buildings?' Even after watching the video of the 2nd plane crashing into the building, it probably took well over a minute for me to comprehend what had happened.

Four days later, my DH and son left to go back to Ukraine.  I stayed an extra week to do some shopping for things we had to ship to Ukraine.  I moved over to another friend's house to do that - the 2nd friend I'd called after the attack and left the message for my 1st friend to call her mom.  I drove her to work a few times down into no-man's land in lower Manhattan...and it would bring tears to my eyes driving down the West Side Highway.  Regular traffic was not allowed down there...but when I was driving down, bus loads of rescue workers were heading to the WTC site, or heading away from it finishing their shifts...and crowds of people were standing on the island in the middle of the West Side Highway holding up huge 'thank you' signs for the rescue workers...and every bus full of rescue workers and/or rescue vehicles were greeted with cheers, clapping, whistling and waves...and those signs.  There were parking lots stacked about 7 feet tall with full of food, water, clothes and other items for the rescue workers.  I still get teary eyed thinking about it.

Sleeping after working a 12 hour night shift and I remember being so mad at hubby for having the TV volume up so loud that it woke me up twice and then on the third time I finally got out of bed to see what the reason was. Sad day.
