Carseats for a Big Boy Baby !

Cooper is (on our home scale - so unofficially) 18 lbs !  He will be 3 months old next Wednesday.

The problem?  We bought the Graco Snugride 22 .  So when he hits 22 lbs he's too big for the seat.  (blame my husband - I wanted the Graco 32, but he won the battle)

As I look at carseats on BRU 's site it seems like all the seats that fit kids above 30 lbs or so are "upright" and he's just not that strong in holding his head up.

Besides buying a Graco 32 to tide us over -- what alternatives are there?  Do you know of any seats with higher weight limits that will work for an "infant" and convert to an older child?

Thank you!

Cindy

Your 3 month old weighs as much as my 11 months old ;-)

We just bought 2 convertible car sears (1 for me and 1 for Russ) and LOVE both of them.  I got a super fantastic deal on Russ' and couldn't pass it up.  We returned a cosco scenera to get it (that thing was a piece of crap).  I did some research on the National Highway Safety website and we got the top 2 convertible car seats available in the US.

The first one, the First Years True Fit
The First Years True Fit Convertible Car Seat - Misty Morning - Learning Curve - Babies
This is the carseat I have in my car.  Libby loves it and is highly comfortable in it.  It has the inserts for infants and then you just remove them for toddlers.  You don't have to rethread the entire back as your child grows.  It is an easy pull bar type thing that adjust the straps higher and lower.  There is the button in the front that allows you to easily loosen and tighten the straps as well.  It is awesome.  It is $190 at BRU, but check Amazon and you can get a better deal.  Or, wait for a 15 or 20% off coupon.

The second one, Recaro Signo

This is the car seat that is in Russ' truck.  I love this one as well.  The straps adjust easily up and down without the threading.  The headrests on the side are AWESOME!  They are nice and bulky and hold her head up when she falls asleep.  The seat is normally $300 and right now is on Amazon for $160!!! (with free shipping)  I originally bought it through Baby Age via Amazon and that company pissed me off.  They canceled my order because I used a $40 coupon THEY had posted on Amazon.  They said it was not a valid coupon and just canceled my order.  So, Amazon was awesome and honored the $40 coupon so I got it for $120.  I couldn't beat it and I love that car seat.  Recaro makes racing seats and so forth.  They are from a foreign country that has much higher standards as far as car seats go.  So, it is much safer than most (if not all) US car seats.  It is rated at a higher speed than all others.

i second the true fit... it seems majorly comfy ( what do i know i dont sit in it) ... it was easy to install... it has latch and these seat belt locks that keep the seat in nice and tight... it goes to 35 lbs rear facing and 65 in the 5 point harness... after jayson got to be about 15 lbs ( about 2 months) i hated!!!!!!!! lugging the infant seat around... it was so heavy... so i switched...

Awe --- such cute cute pictures !!!   I love the diaper-sleeping-baby picture!

Thanks for the reference !

We still attempt to lug around his Graco seat with him in it.... but more and more I am taking him out because it's just too heavy - even just from car to cart.

Thanks again!

We just switched our 8 month old from the infant carrier to the convertable Graco (don't remember the model) and I too was worried about him being too upright.  But when we actually installed it (facing the rear) it has a parallel to ground guide and it is VERY reclined.  He's very comfortable in there and I really don't think a 3 month old will have a significant problem.  This is the same one our 3yr old used for years and when it's forward facing, it is VERY upright.  So when you look at yours, keep in mind they sit very different with the two installations.

I am not alone, neither are you.

Thank you!  We have a Graco now and like it so I will look at the "big boy" Graco seats too.

I didn't realize they would sit different with rear vs. front facing, but makes sense.

i was kinda in the same position...when i had my first son i got the peg perego infant car seat....and it was fine for the first year. then when my second son was born we used the peg perego but around 6 months he was way too long for it and had to buy another infant car seat...kinda ridiculous...but at least it went to thirty some inches for length.
ps...your little guy is adorable!
