OT: Wiping butt and shoes

Now, hows that for a subject this morning... haha.  :)

First off, this is for the mothers with boys. My son will be 5 in 2 weeks and isn't wiping his own butt after going potty. I've tried to get him to do it on his own but his complaint is that he can't see it. How did you train your son to wipe? I'm at a lost... 

Secondly, shoes! Shoes for little girls. How are they sized? I know they're sized 2, 3, 4, etc, but how do you know what age that is? My daughter will be one in October and is walking so I need to invest in some shoes for her. Any thoughts??!

I told my 5 year old son that I wouldn't wipe his butt until he did it one time first.  He could either sit there with a crappy butt or wipe it once to learn.  I'd get the rest.  Then eventually we moved on to "oh, wipe it just ONE more time and I'll finish!"  so he did.  Then after he'd do that one, I'd say - "well, you're all done!!" and occasionally check but we never had a problem.  :-)

Your one year old daughter is around a size 5.  Most 1 year olds are.  It doesn't matter boy/girl at this age.  Unless she has extrememly pudgy feet, she should be easy to find shoes for.

First I just have to say my nephew will be 7 in January and if he isn't wiped by an adult then he leaves stuff behind. He didn't even start "trying" to wipe himself until last month. So I don't have any suggestions just saying your not alone.

As for girl shoes, if you go to payless or most shoe stores have a foot size thingy. I know my daughter wore a size 5 at 1 year old and now a size 7 at 17 months, but she has bigger feet then most kids her age because they are wide. Happy shoe shopping this is the start of a possibly expensive venture (girls and shoes...LOL)

I don't know about the butt thing because I'm not there yet. 

The shoes, I can answer that.  Dylan wears a size 3 and I think she's about done with them.  So we will be getting her size 4.   She turned 1 yesterday.   We have Pediped shoes for her.  They are fantastic.  

Due to religious/cultural reasons, we have 'bun washers' attached to all of our toilets - and always install them whenever we move...so by the time my son was 5, he would use that.  It's sort of like the spray house that would be in your kitchen sink for rinsing off the dishes...but you spray your patootie to clean..then just dry w/some toilet paper.  My son loved it - because it was water - so it wasn't an issue with him.  If something like that's not a feasible option...then I'd see about getting some flushable wipes - I have seen a brand in my magazines that I know is sold there in the States, but I can't remember the name of it...they make flushable kids wipes to help them clean up after going to the bathroom, kids foaming handsoap, etc...seems like the container is orange and purple and has a baby animal - dinosaur or something - as it's logo.  Maybe if you explained that you'd bought that especially for him - and tell him how many he should use each time he goes to the bathroom - so he doesn't get wipe happy and use the entire pack in one shot - maybe you could convince him to do it himself.  That might also eliminate any potential race tracks if he's cleaning with something wet.

No answer re shoes for girls...I don't have a girl...but it looks like you've got a few good sources already replying with the info.

I transitioned both my boys to wiping their own bottoms using flushable wipes (Kadoo uses bright packaging and is very kid-friendly).  I told them if they still had poo poo on the third wipe that they needed to call me in to help (mostly because I didn't want the toilet overflowing!), but they only ever needed to call me in a couple of times.

Thanks everyone for the ideas. I bought some of the flushable wipes at Walmart. They are the parents choice brand (alot cheaper than the Kadoos brand). And bought a size 4 shoe for my daughter to try. The size 5  just looked too big. So, we'll see how it goes...

Take your daughter to Payless and have them measure her feet.  All babies are different!  Libby is over 11 months old and I just bought her a size 4 Nike and they are a bit big.  She had huge feet when she was born and never wore a newborn "shoe" because her feet were so big.  Now, her cousin on the other hand is chunky monkey and has a wide foot but very small.  Her Mommy has to buy her shoes at Stride Rite because they are short and fat.

Thanks Malena for the tip. I'll try these that I bought at Walmart and if they don't fit then we'll go to Payless. KayBug has wide chunky feet too. She weighs 22 lbs. She also has a high instep, I guess thats what you call it. My son has the same. I'll cry if I have to go to Stride Rite for a shoe for her... Single parenting = little to budget!  :)
