labs

I have a question about labs.  Pre-pregnancy I had perfect labs.  Lately I have been having leg cramps so I ask the Dr. to draw my electrolytes.  They were bad.

blood count is low (even after prescription iron twice daily for a little over 1 month)
Sodium low
Magnesium low
Potassium low
calcium low

Tomorrow I start a new battery of prescription supplements.

I worry about making my baby toxic.  Before pregnancy the amount of vitamins that I took 3 times daily was insane.  However, it obviously did the trick.  My question is this.  If I have to take 2-3 times the normal dosages for  my levels to stay within normal limits......how does this effect the baby?

Thank God I am only 5ish weeks from delivery so hopefully I won't have to struggle with this long.  Does anyone have any ideas on this topic?

Thank you in advance for all your help,
Mary

My guess would be, and it is just that a guess (I'd call the Dr for the concrete information) that if you are so low on the vitamin levels to need additional supplementation that you are getting the right amount to sustain your body and not an excesss.

I take 5000mcg of B12 just to sustain a healthy level. Many people don't need any at all - so for me that is the "right" amount.

Hope that this helps!

I had a prenatal screen at my first prenatal visit (when I was 8 wks) and they came back fine.   From what I understand, the baby will take what it needs from you and then you get the "leftovers".   So if you aren't doing well with getting enough vitamins, you will be the one who suffers, not the baby.   My bariatric doctor said I have to do blood labs every 3 months during my pregnancy to check my vitamin levels, which I'm fine with doing.   GL to you- you're almost there!!

Hit goal weight of 140 at 13 months out from RNY!! 130 pounds GONE!
