Question about luteal phase.

My husband and I are going to start trying for another child in Feburary as I'll be a year out from lap band then and I'm starting to chart my cycles now to give us a heads up on what's going on and when I'll be fertile, etc. Last month, according to fertility friend, I ovulated on day 19 and then started my period on day 28 which gives me a short luteal phase. Now my periods are always regular between 28-30 days and so far this cycle it looks like I ovulated on day 18 which will probably give me a 10 day luteal phase. I've heard that short luteal phases aren't good for sustaining a pregnancy. I was doing research on the vitamins fertilaid and I really don't know if it's worth the money or not. Just wondering if any of you have any experience in this.
Oh and my first child was a surprise so this will be our first time trying to concieve.

The average length of the human luteal phase is fourteen days. Between ten and sixteen days is considered normal, although luteal phases of less than twelve days may make it more difficult to achieve pregnancy. While luteal phase length varies significantly from woman to woman, for the same woman the length will be fairly consistent from cycle to cycle.

i would suggest getting an ovulation test sold by the pregnancy test it will test the levels of hormones in your body at the time you think you are ovulating (not sure which method you are going by to calculate your ovulation i have never heard of fertility friend) i googled it and the only sure way to know is measure your hormone levels (ovulation test kit or dr can assist)

Progesterone plays a vital role in making the endometrium receptive to implantation of the blastocyst and supportive of the early pregnancy; it also has the side effect of raising the woman's basal body temperature.

good luck and hold off on the fertility aids your body went through major changes and that means hormone changes as well with your surgery and weight loss, your body may just need some more time, I am not even allowed to think about getting pregnant till i am at least 18 months out according to the dr

I've been doing the BBT and charting it online. This month I decided to try the ovulation tests which showed a positive on day 18 and that is also the same day that my temp spiked. I know that my body could be adjusting too cause I've lost over 100 lbs so far that is partly why I'm tracking things now to see if it's consistent or if it's still adjusting. My doctor is fine with me trying after 1 year.

It is hard to exactly pinpoint ovulation, but even if you are off by a day either way...your LP is still short.  If I were you, I would start small by taking B6 during your luteal phase.  That usually helps women get a few extra days.  If that doesn't work, OTC progesterone may help.  Both of those things require no doctor.  If neither work, a doctor can prescribe stronger progesterone or put you on clomid usually will lengthen LPs.  Good luck.

I also read something about the B6 but I wasn't sure how much to take, same with the progesterone. I am not sure if that is something I should try taking now or wait til I'm ready to actually start trying to conceive.

I had Luteal Phase Defect when ttc my first child and my LP was usually 8-9 days.  You at least need a minimum of 10 days or even better, 12 days to even sustain a pregnancy.   If you get a fertilized egg and then it comes down to implant on your lining, it can't if your lining has already started breaking down.

I'd wait to see if your LP and your cycles normalize a bit more once most of your weight is gone, that happens to a lot of us once the weight is off.  But If your LP is still short when you ttc next Feb,  I would suggest talking to your doctor and getting on some progesterone supplements like I did to extend your LP.  Otherwise, it might take a while for you to get pg or you might have some uneccessary miscarriages.

Hit goal weight of 140 at 13 months out from RNY!! 130 pounds GONE!

I was 325 when I got pregnant with my daughter and I didn't plan it so I'm not sure if my luteal phase was different then or not as I've never charted when I ovulate before but it does concern me now. I guess I will just wait and see what happens as it gets closer to Feb, but it is good to know that it might be an easy fix. I'd hate to keep having miscarriages when it's something I could be preventing.

I had a short lp...9-10 days. I started an over the counter progesterone cream that I bought at walmart in the vitamin section. I used one teaspoon twice a day rubbed into my thigh, but started it after o was confirmed on fertility friend, so 3 days post o. It lengthened my lp to 11-12 days and was just what I needed to get pg both times without a script. Good luck. Shari

I didn't know there was a cream, that would be much better than a pill. It's hard to swallow pills with a lap band . Thanks for the info.

I have labband. The progesterone pill that is prescribed you don't swallow. It is a suppository that you inject vaginally.

Thanks,
