Just a question...
Just a question...
If it is so dangerous to become pregnant less then 2 years after wls, why do so many women end up pregnant and delivering healthy babies? I have heard of this happening to ladies that say they were pregnant before surgery but tests did not pick it up. And also ladies that got pregnant very soon after surgery. I am talking about actual RNY & DS wls'.
Have any of you heard of a woman having complications from getting pregnant to soon or from being pregnant during surgery? When I see the dates I just wonder.
Not trying to offend, I'm just curious.

low vitiman levels are the most frequent problems you will have... the baby takes everything from you.... and you are the one that usually suffers... and being so early out there really isnt enough food intake to "keep up" with both of you.... alot of times your baby will suffer from what is called "iugr"....intra-utrian growth retardiation.... how ever you spell it... ketosis which will happen is not good for developing fetus brain.... trouble keeping your blood sugar up....most of the time everything will be ok though :)
Thanks Lexa. I was just wondering and I still haven't seen any real complications related to time frame posted here. But what you said makes sense. I was really wondering if anybody just terminated the pregnancy rather than risk the complications. I know that will make most people here cringe, but if it is unsafe for mother & baby...

you wont find much about termination here.... alot of the ladies here have been trying to concieve for many many years and still suffer from infertility even after WLS...its a sad thing.... this is my 2nd post op pregnancy and ive only seen a few questions about termination.. usually about absorbtion of the pill... unfortunally those few that do come here to ask get thier head chewed off... there really are not many complications on this board related to wls because most people wait the recommended 12-18 months.... the ones you do read about are just regular complications.... of course you will have the very early post op every once in a while losing 50 or so pounds ...
I'm replying because I got pregnant 2 months post op. We had an oopsy. I have crappy pregnancies anyway, but I worrried constantly during my pregnancy with Nikolas. He was IUGR, not because my vitamins were low, but because I couldn't eat enough. I ended up having to drink high calorie shakes. I was also on bedrest to preserve my calories. Nikolas is fine in the end and truly a blessing after ten years of trying, but it wasn't a walk in the park. Hehe--I'm very in love with the final product, but not a big fan of actually being pregnant. Like Lexa said, many of us have tried for years to get pregnant so we are willing to risk our own health for a little bit to have a baby.

I have only ever heard of 12-18 month embargo on pregnancy after surgery. I got pregnant 11 1/2 months out (planned) because my labs were always very good which is the biggest concern since both surgeries involve malabsorbtion. I am 21 weeks and so far so good. I was even able to discontinue my iron. I think the blanket statements are like the "no drinking during pregnancy of any kind" or "no lunch meat during pregnancy" statements. Blanket statements meant to be the "saftest" course of action. Meaning that we don't know how to tell if you are the person these things will be a problem for so better safe then sorry.
My doctor told me at least a year to 18 months post op to start trying for a baby. He just wanted my weight loss to almost be stopped and maintain for a few months and for my labs to be ok, which they were around my year visit.
I lost 100 pounds in the first 6 months and then in the next 6, lost 30 more and those last few months, it slowed down to like 1 pound a month if that. So in May, I had my IUD taken out and we started trying in July (at 13 months out). I got pg the first time and was amazed because my other 2 pg's took each over a year to get pg with and I had to take fertility drugs with child #2 for 2 months to get pg.
Not all doctors tell their WLS patients this, but you have to use 2 forms of bc for the first year to 18 months post op because once we lose this weight, a lot of women can become VERY fertile and get pg much more easily with the weight gone.
The baby will take what it needs from you and you will be the one that suffers if you are too soon out of surgery or aren't properly taking care of yourself (taking vitamins, enough protein, etc). But many women have gotten pg after sugery and have gone on to have healthy babies and have been fine. I felt good about waiting at least a year and then trying for a baby and it worked out great for us!

me and my b/f went to the dr's (surgeon, family dr and obgyn) who all looked over the labs, and my weightloss and they all gave me the go ahead.
I am not doing anything to be proactive, but im not being protective either...if god wants it to happen it does if not it doesnt....i will begin to actively try at 12 months. right now just regulating periods and learning...
I am 7 months out as of 9-2-09. start weight of 330 current 217 and goal 190
I was taken off iron b/c im getting too much....(i was taking 29 mg daily) i have been backed off the b12. (now only do monthly) I do have to focus on getting enough protein....(that is a challenge for me.
hope this helps.

I've heard of one person on here having severe ketosis but that's it. I got pregnant 4 months post-op by surprise and had no issues. Like a previous poster said, the baby will take what they need from you, you just have to make sure that you keep up your supply of vitamins and calories for your own sake. I still managed to gain 50 lbs and have a 10.5 lb little moose. Go figure!
