Placenta previa
on 9/1/09 4:40 pm
I thought I was just going in for the gender sonogram but I got some additional news I wasn't expecting. I was diagnosed with complete placenta previa and told I will be needing a c-section.
How dangerous is this? I'm going to school and about to apply for a job which I'm already too busy for. If I had to be on bed-rest for the last part of this pregnancy ..I don't know, there is just so much that I need to get done before this baby is born .. I'm kind of freaking out a little bit.

Congrats on your baby girl! How exciting to learn the gender.
Second, please don't freak out...
I am currently 30 weeks along and until recently, I had marginal placenta previa...for about 6 or 8 weeks. I was on pelvic rest meaning nothing was to go near the vagina and no lifting more than 10 lbs. During a routine u/s last week it was revealed the the placenta had moved entirely out of the way of the cervix and at today's u/s it was labeled as a "high" placenta. The doctor explained that as the uterus grew, the placenta moved up with it. I wish the same for you! Your uterus and baby will be doing a lot of growing going forward...
So, don't lose hope...things can change. For me, it helped to know there was nothing I coud do to change it...and that there were only things I could avoid (lifting, straining, sex) to prevent complicating matters.
I know it is much easier said than done, but take a deep breath and try not to stress too much,

Don't freak out. Do some reading about placenta previa; there are risks involved but there's also a chance it could resolve. My SIL and I were pregnant at the same time, both having our 2nd child and no problems with the first. We were both diagnosed with marginal placenta previa. Hers moved by the end of the pregnancy. Mine didn't and I had a csection. I was more scared of the csection because my first was vaginal. But the good news was that I got to meet my baby at 38 weeks because of the previa and csection. The surgery went fine. Jeremy was working a little hard to breathe so they kept him in the NICU overnight to monitor him. But he was/is healthy and beautiful. Don't worry; it's not good for the baby. Just study up so you can be prepared on what to expect. Good luck.
