When to seek out an RE?

Hi there... Was hoping to not have to go here, but....Just wondering if/when I might start thinking of talking to an RE...

I'm 34 now- 35 in Feb. Started TTC #2 in March (#2 for me (9), 1st for hubby) .

1st 2 cycles, did OPK's only
Next 3 cycles, did OPK and temping

I know usually they say if you're 35 or older, 6 months. But do you think it should be 6 months total or 6 months of temps?

Cycle 5 that just ended was annovulatory and 47 days. But the cycle before was normal, and I did have a progesterone blood test 7 days DPO that results were in normal range.

Here's my FF chart if it's helpful

Thanks for any info, words of advice, baby dust, etc ;)

Honestly I would make the appointment. It can take sometimes a month or so to get in. Plus they will be able to run alot of tests and discuss all options with you.

Thanks for the input Sara, I guess I need to start looking for a place and at least Schedule something, especially if it takes a while to get in\

Our experience was that my OB referred me to an RE after 6 months of (diligent) TTC. I was 30 at the time, hubby was 37. It did take a while to get the appt. and be seen.

Best of luck Lisa!

Thanks Paula,
Maybe I'll have to talk to my ob/gyn to see what she thinks. Saw her in January for annual appt, didn't really discuss what to do if I didnt get pg, I guess I assumed that since it happened so easily the 1st time that it would this time too. Was 24 then, now 34.

Make the appointment. I was 34 (last November) when I went to the RE. I had six months of charting to show them. He didn't too much only to say you are regular and have the same cycle every month. He did tests up until end of December and then we did three IUI's, I got pregnant and miscarried. Now, on IUI #4 and it doesn't look promising. My point, is it will take time to run any tests and go through appointments.

Since you have had a child, they know you can get pregnant. They will run a test to make sure your tubes are clear and then test hubby. My RE just believes when you are close to 35 the sooner you come see him, the sooner he can get you baby/babies.

Good luck!

Hi Traci, thanks for writing.

How do they check if your tubes are clear? I have Taking Charge of your Fertility, and if all that's in there, I haven't read those sections yet.

How did you choose your RE? Did your OB refer you, or choose someone in your plan, or personal referral? I haven't really discussed any of it with my OB- I saw her in January and let her know we were TTC, but just assumed it would happen quickly.

I'm a little nervous about costs too. My plan pays 80% so I pay 20%. Better than no coverage for sure, but I would think it could add up?!

My insurance pays for infertility diagnosis but not treatment. So, I have insurance that paid for hubby to be tested and me. The test is a a hysterosalpingogram (HSG). It is an X-ray test that examines the inside of uterus and fallopian tubes and the surrounding area. They shoot die through your tubes and see it on x-ray. It is an EASY test!

Now, I have paid $2k a pop for IUI since my insurance will not cover fertility medication and for IUI. So, I understand about money! I did three of them in a row and got pregnant. Then, I had a miscarriage at 8 1/2 weeks. I just did my fourth and it was unsuccessful!

HI Shari,

I just dont want to spend a lot of money if I don't have to. I keep just thinking it's gotta happen naturally! I'm not sure even how to go about picking an RE. Never discussed this with my OB... Saw her in January at annual appointment and discussed TTC... So i guess I gotta look a little further and maybe at least schedule an appt, especially if they tend to book a ways out.
