OT Update on me for my Monday weigh in buddies

On Tuesday of this week I spiked a temp of 103...went to the doc who said he thought my PICC line for my TPN was infected.  He did cultures and said no antibiotics until we find out what is going on.  Well I continued to run the high temp, even with Tylenol and Ibuprofen, so I went back  in to see him today.  He called the lab and got prelim reports and it seems I have an infection of my PICC which is going into my blood.  So, he immediately shipped me off to an infectious disease doc.  When we got there, he said the PICC has to come out and you need IV antibiotics for several days.  So, I dont have to be admitted, but I have to have IV antibiotics in their office every day until the infection clears.

I am beyond frustrated, as I am no where near my surgeons goal weight of 125.  I weighed 103 in both doctors' offices today.  I have no clue what will happen now.  I am going to try to get my surgeon to let me stay off the TPN for a few weeks and see if I can maintain.   If I can't, then obviously I will be willing to get the PICC put back in, but I really have been feeling good at this weight, and I see no reason to make me weigh 125 pounds when I am only 5 feet tall.  When I was healthy for 4 years after my bypass I only weighed 110, so I think 125 is overkill, but we shall see.

Anyhoooooooo I will post my weight on Monday...lets pray that I have not lost even an ounce.  I am going to try REALLY hard to eat 2500 calories a day and see if I can maintain or even gain a bit.

Hugs to all my groupies...LOL

I'm sorry about all your troubles, Laura, but it's a good thing they caught the infection before it went on any longer.  I hope you are able to maintain!  I don't understand what the problem is for them with you weighing 103 pounds - it's a "normal" BMI for your height.  From what I can see, 125 would be pushing the limits of "normal" to the high end - right?

Take Care,
Tanja

Hi Tanya :)

Yes, 125 pounds is 2 pounds from the highest normal weight a person of my height should be.  The theory is that if I can possibly get that high, then it will not hurt if I lose 10 pounds, and I would still be healthy enough at 115 for them to do an open exploratory surgery.  I don't know if I agree with that theory or what.  I am just frustrated with the whole thing...LOL  But, that is why they are saying 125.

Thanks for your thoughts and prayers :)

Oh goodness! Was it because the PICC line wasn't flushed enough or something? Either way, it doesn't matter now. All that matters is those antibiotics kicking in and making you better! I hope you  can get all your calories in and have a gain on monday. Even if it is only a few ounces.

Do you still have an appt monday with surgeon?

When life hands you lemons, ask for tequila & salt and give me a call!

Hi Jo,

The infections probably occurred due to another "minor" infection in my body elsewhere that then attached itself to the PICC because it is a foreign body, and went hog wild.  I think the only thing that could happen if you do not flush enough is the line clotting, but I am not positive on that one.   I have an appointment on the 1st, which is Tuesday.  I have been thinking this entire week that Monday was the 1st...my kids had to pull me back into reality..LOL  I will post after my appointment and give an update regarding that appointment :)

Thanks Jo!

Oh Laura I am so sorry!  I had an infection in my knee resulting in emergency knee surgery and have been on IV antibiotics 3x a day for the past month.  Just yesterday I started having issues with my PICC.  Are you pregnant as well?  I am and it makes it more interesting to say the least.

I hope you get better soon!  It's scary how easily things can get infected and how fast it can spread especially in the instance where you have something going directly into your bloodstream.

 Hi Jenn!

I am sorry you have been ill and are pregnant to boot.  I am sure that is really tough.  No, I am not pregnant...I had my last baby 7 years ago.  He was my 8th...so we figured that was enough...LOL  We did not make the decision final until a couple of years ago that we weren't going to have anymore, so I started hanging out here when we were in limbo, and I have never moved...I love this board and the women on it :)

Laura,
Sorry to hear about the infected PICC, that stinks...I hope that they can get that cleared up ASAP!  As far as the weight, I think 103 is great for you! Right?  I'm probably out of the loop a bit because of my own issues, but by my last count that is way up from where you were, so I say Great job!!  I do know that from where we have all come from, and having been there, having someone tell you to gain weight is a real mind melter, and I get it.  So, get healthy, eat as much as you can, and maybe we can keep the PICC/TPN away :)

 JULES!!!!!!

How are ya girlie?  Well, you can see how I am...LOL   Yes, 103 is actually a 21 pounds (yes I did say 21, its not a typo) gain.   I have actually been feeling VERY good even though I haven't gained any weight to speak of for the last 3-4 weeks.   It's like I gain and lose the same 3-4 pounds each week.  So I dunno!  I spoke with my revision surgeon today, and all of a sudden he is all gungho to get going on another open procedure to take a "look-see".   If he finds nothing, he would like to totally reverse the "bypass" part of my surgery and turn my pouch into a sleeve gastrectomy.  I do not know anything about the sleeve, so I am thinking this over and trying to investigate "things" before I jump on the OR table again.   I see the "special" surgeon on Tuesday again at the UW.  I am going to negotiate with him on the whole weight issue and see what he thinks about Lauter's plan for an immediate surgery on me.  I, personally, think that Lauter wants to do the surgery to CYA in case there really is something wrong.  He definitely would not want to be sued especially since someone else performed the surgery to begin withl

Anyway, how have you been doing?  Are you feeling any better at all?  I have not been on as much...so I may have missed your posts.

XOXOXOXOXO

Laura  :)
