My daughter...

My 15 year old step daughter for about the past year has been going through a "faze" where she loves the punk look LOL! Well Yesterday she took it a bit further and got hair cut and colored. She has a rainbow of hair colors. Have any of you had teens go through this or were you punk? I'm glad it's just hair and not piercings or tattoo's. I let her do the hair since it is just hair. But wow the looks we get. She is the sweetest girl and gets great grades. I'm so worried people will pre judge her and that her teachers will have it in for her. Any advice??
She babysat all summer to pay for her hair and clothes LOL!! Here is her pic! Its way brighter in person!

She's cute...naaa I think most teachers and even grown ups have learned that kids express themselves in a whole mix of ways.  My 13 year old (I have to say- adopted simply because I deny that I could be old enough to be her mom) has got to the I would die before I'd wear that part of teens.  It cracks me up..I try to look at it in a positive light at least she is finding some independence.  The other day I mentioned private school- she quickly added "no way, I am not wearing a uniform to school" to which I quickly finished what I was saying- I was talking about it for my 1 year old...because they start private school at 3 around here.  At least she was willing to pay the bill for it all too.  Yes- far better this then tattoo's and such (although I probably have or have had the other things you fear!).  Good luck mom!

She's gorgeous. Believe it not, this look is more common and accepted than you would think. Back in my day, I did it all...and is WAS NOT accepted. Alex has had his hair completely bleached and dyed red and has has both of his ears pierced. Nobody says anything about it. Actually, his friends are from all different groups and they accept each other just fine. Just remember this is not as outrageous as it used to be. Let her have fun with it now. DH's mom made him dress a certain way and as soon as he got out of the house he got a mohawk, five piercings and numorous tattoos....he went crazy with it. My mom didn't care as long as I didn't look ****y and I grew out of it.

If her behavior is fine and her grades are fine, I say let her be a teenager.

It is more excepted and lots of kids her age are punk. She is honestly the sweetest girl. She is very helpful at home and gets awesome grades. Her friends are all good friends and just sweet too. She is so out going...I just love her :) Isn't she beautiful??? She gets all A's and B's she doesn't party or drink or do drugs. She is not having sex. We are so close and we talk about things that I know most girls don't tell their Mom's. It helps that I'm only 30 so she opens up to me.
I think kids need to express themselves. And it's hair so it can change!

I think she looks cute!  At least she doesn't have a bunch of metal sticking out of her face!

I completely agree with the pp. She is gorgeous... smart... I wouldn't worry about a thing. I'm like everyone else too at least its not tattoos, sex, drinking, drugs, pierceings, etc. Hair is just hair... it'll grow back to normal. Show this picture to her when she's 30... You both should get a good chuckle out of it.  LOL

My 15 year old does the same kind of thing. He likes it long and wears all the skull stuff and spikes and all. I think its ok. Its just expression. His therapist which he has been in therapy and psychiatric hospitals since age 6 for about 5 stays says if all he wants to do is rebell with hair then be very happy!! He is bipolar and used to be a handful and abusive and so now that he is a great kid and is willing to do what he is told and is really just awesome I am happy with his hair. He even joked about wanting a lip piercing and it freaked him out more that I said ok then anything. Sometimes its just a shock factor and if its something you dont like a whole lot act like it does not matter. Reverse psychology works pretty well. I think her hair looks cool and I would be proud of her and make sure she knows no matter what she looks like or all its whats inside that counts. I would probably even do this kind of thing to my hair if I could. Mine does not grow that long and I think people would look more strangely at me doing it than a teenager. I think its all great!!

I think you're a good mom to be worried but try not to.  I know a lot of people who didn't rebel as teenagers.  They have a pretty bad time in their 20s.

I think it looks cute but I used to be a punk (orange hair and shaved head).

I turned out to be a TV writer and married a rocket scientist.  LOL.

I'm not worried so much about her or her look. I worry more about how people will view her. She is such a great girl and honestly one of the brightest lights in my life. I love my kids more than anything and I don't want to see her get hurt. I'm nervous the teachers will judge her. But once she shows she is a great student with a bright future I'm sure they will see she is just a fun kid :) I have learned to pick my battles and if purple, pink and black hair is the worst she has ever done, then I'm SO lucky :)

She is so pretty!!! People will judge regardless... I think we all know that one too well. If she is a good student and gets good grades and that continues they will probably think it is just a phase she is going through as most teens do something like that.
