Hey Ladies,

I am newer to this board. My  family doctor just sent in my referral to  the Surgeon. They  feel that my first contact would be Feb 2010.

I have so many questions and a few of teh ladies  from the VSG board pointed me here.

I  know that WLS is a tool but  I have so many question regarding pregnancy after WLS.

I am 27 and my hubby is 32 .We aren't getting any younger and I feel I would like to have a child before I am 34 . I would wantto try and concieve until after my goal and maintain it for a while.

I want to know what WLS have you had? LB,VSG,  RNY or etc?

What  time frame did your doctor say to try?

What risks   are involved with the surgery you had?

are there more risks with one type of WLS procedure  vs another?

Thanks,

Mel

Welcome to the board.

I had the LB.  When I  went to the doctor before the surgery, he told me to wait two years.  That is so I could reach my goal weight and maintain it.  I felt like you that I was not getting any younger and I wanted to start trying.  AFter reading on the board and calling the doctor, the doctor said that you can try after a year.  So I began trying after a year.  I did not get my goal before trying.  Some will tell you that is a bad thing.  You and your doctor have to decide what is best for you.  Only you as a team will know what is best because you know your body better than anybody.  They did tell me pre-surgery that after surgery you will be fertile myrtle so you need to have BC.  They said that the baby could be small.  You have to watch nutrition.  They stated the baby will get it's nutrition first and then you will get yours so you need to be sure you get enough for both you and the baby.
I hope I answered your questions.
Good luck on your journey in weight loss surgery.

Getting WLS and losing weight will (in most cases) make future pregnancy much much easier and less risky actually. Of course wait until you get the ok by your Dr. Once you do get pregnant you will more than likely have to take a few more vitamins than maybe a normal pregnant woman might and you will also have to make sure you get enough protein but other than that it should be a really great experience for you! Good luck w/ your WLS!!

I had RNY and my doctor's basic guidline is 18 months after surgery. It's really when your weight stablizes. I lost about 20 pounds from my 7 month (had my gall bladder out and it was that check up) and my year so I got the ok weight wise. I had a few other issues I had to work out before that. He said as soon as I got the clearance from the cardiologist I was good to go.

Thank you Ladies  for all your openess and  advice. I just had soo many questions and this was a question on my mind.

Was there any   specific tests you went for  when you found out  you  were pregnant or  did you  consult your doctors first and they send you  for additional tests and etc....??

I had RNY and was told to wait a year.  I whoopsie-dasically got pregnant at 4 months post op.  We tried for 8+ years to get pregnant and finally adopted our first.  We forgot birth control one time and OOPS!  Pregnant.

I had no complications with my pregnancy due to the WLS.  Matter of fact, I still gained 50 lbs, had a 10.5 lb baby boy, and lost 42 lbs within 2 weeks.  I only switched my vitamin routine from a regular vit to a prenatal and made sure to have my labs drawn every 3 months on the nose.  They were perfect every time.

Good luck to you!  Having this surgery (or whichever kind you have) makes pregnancy so much easier on your body!

I had RNY on March 30th this year and was told to use condoms for the first year.  Since my husband and I had been TTC for 3+ years we were less than compliant.  I found out Monday that I am pregnant!  I am really scared......I'm fearful of miscarriage.  I've lost 75 pounds so far my surgeon says he thinks I'll be fine however, I think I would have more peace of mind if I had been more cautious and waited......

WOW kcsunshine! We have VERY similar stories! I had Lapband surgery 4/6/09 and have lost over 70 lbs also. We neglected to use a condom ONCE this month and I just got a positive pregnancy test today!!! I'm TOTALLY shocked and a little nervous to call my surgeon, I know I was supposed to wait longer but this was so not planned. I'm very happy though!

Good luck to you!

I had RNY 3 years ago. By the time I was 12 weeks post op., I found out I was 10 Weeks pregnant. Big No! No! from the surgeon.  I was a mess. But I took extra vitamins and was monitored frequently to make sure baby was growing. Everything turned out just fine, I lost 90lbs while being pregnant and baby was healthy -born weighing 7lbs 10 oz.
I'm definatley not saying go get pg. right away but it happened and everything worked out fine.
