I'm struggling
So, I'm 8 months post op and 5-6 weeks pg (not sure of dates). The dietician suggested eating 1500 calories a day to help have a healthy baby. I have been writing down everything that I eat, but my nausea has been so bad that sometimes I'm lucky to 600-700. Most days I don't even hit 1000. Suggestions?? I'm struggling and scared that the baby will suffer. Doesn't help that all I want to do is sleep.

Are you taking anything for the nausea? I know some women mention an anti-nausea drug that begins w/a 'Z' but I can't remember the name of it. Most have said that helps them.
From what I understand...the baby's likely to get what he/she needs to grow...you're the one who's going to lose nutrition if you can't get in what you need. Try eating some whole wheat crackers or dry toast (which will help make sure you're not in ketosis, which is bad for the baby's development) to settle your stomach...even if it's just a bite at a time every few minutes...and don't focus strictly on protein right now. Yes...you need the protein...but you and the baby need some fruit/veggies/carbs right now too. Keep experimenting w/different foods and hopefully you'll find a few that work for you both.

I eat Saltines with butter...Alot of them! Also with laughing cow cheese sometimes. The crackers go down pretty easy and the butter adds calories. They also help with nausea I've heard. I've been pretty lucky in that arena so far...knock on wood. Generally I'm fine as long as I have something in my stomach...every time I've thrown up its been on an empty stomach. So I pretty much do exactly what we're not supposed to do normally....graze. It's a habit I won't keep afterward but it's necessary now.

Right now, the baby's gonna take what it need from your fat stores. In the past, I've taken Zofran(didn't do anything for me but make me constipated, but helps a lot of women), B-6 and unisom(can never remember the correct dose), and phenergran. Ask your doc if this goes on, gets worse, or you lose 10% of your body weight. Expecially if you feel you can't stay hydrated. Phenergran works for me, but it knocks me on my butt and evidentally I get up and eat and stuff...but do not remember doing so. I can't take it without Dave being here to take care of the baby. This is the first pregnancy I've ever had that I haven't had hyperemsis.
With Niko, he was growing fine until about 14 weeks and I couldn't eat my caloric requirements. He was IUGR. So, my doc and I talked and I went on weight gainer shakes. Niko ended up being 5 lbs 12 oz. Small, but big for an IUGR baby....and otherwise perfectly healthy.
I am over nine weeks now and the eating thing still plagues me. I have lost 12 lbs so far and I don't really have much more I can lose. DH mentioned starting the shakes again. I only make about 700 calories a day.I'm not as nausious this time, but I have crazy food aversions.
I'll probably start the shakes this week because they really do help with the constant starvation. Drinking them at night makes me able to sleep through the night.
Just remember, before you take anything, take the label into your doc and ask if the ingredients are okay. Some people have a hard time gagging them down.
Try not to woryy for the time being, but bring it up with your doc. They may want to do growth scans on the baby.
Hugs,
Angie
