question about food and vitamins

So my dr told me to stop taking my old multi vitamin (centrum liquid) because the alcohol level was too high and it did not contain folic acid/folate or anything like that. She told me to go get a generic brand, cheapest one, cause next month after blood work they are going to give me a script based on what I need. My question is do I need to take 2 a day or is just 1 good enough? And also mine contains iron (28) and calcium (200 but carbonate)...is that bad?

My other question is I am scared I am going to do harm to forming baby. I dont think I am eating enough or enough protein. I know protein can be on a back burner a bit but I dont want it to get too low. I am only getting about 50 g a day because I havent been on shakes for almost 2 months now. Do I need to start drinking these again? And I havent had much of an appetite but when I do get hungry I am ravished and it seems like I can eat more than before. And the thought of chicken...any kind but hot wings...absolutely repulses me but seafood of any kind hits the tummy just right. Is too much seafood like shrimp and crab legs bad for me and is the old tale of no tuna still true?

Someone help me please cause I feel so lost and I am doing something wrong. Thank you ladies for any help and I will try not to ask too many questions a day.

Well I am no expert but here is my take on your questions. I would take what the Dr. recommended vitamin wise. Taking 2 could do more harm than good with some things so just follow what they say and they are gonna re-eval next month anyways.  And as for the protein baby needs protein too so I would say to make sure you are getting enough a shake would be fine. I still drink them on occasion ( I'm a meat eater so I get my protein, lol). I would also use moderation on the seafood. You can have tuna just not daily...I asked my Dr. about seafood and he said just like with everything moderation. Try not to be too hard on yourself. Not everyone is gonna agree on what's safe and unsafe during pregnancy. Some people say no deli meat...others eat it daily and are fine. Talk to your Dr. and listen to your body. You are gonna be just fine. These little ones are tougher than we give them credit for. Just take good care of yourself and the rest will be OK. P&PT's.

Thank you. She didnt recommend how many to take just what brand. I am afraid of getting levels too high. I love meat too lol just not ch****n so much right now :( I'm kinda scared about the seafood too because it seems to be all I want to eat. Hopefully its good.

Hey Unique, bring up your calcium to 1500.  Add caltrate or citracal with vitamin d they are always on sale at CVS and Walgreens 200ct. $8.99.  You are going to need the extra calcium during your pregnancy.  Also, I would just recheck with your gyn in regards to how much seafood to consume in the 1st trimester.  It never hurt to ask.  Also another quick tip when you take your iron incorporate a little orange juice it helps to absorb the iron into you system.

As far as your protein intake, I think you should increase a bit.  But your doctors should be able to assist you with that as well.

Best of luck to you.

Thank you for your response. I am currently taking 1500 of elemental calcium a day in liquid form. But now I am trying to figure out how to add this prenatal instead of my regular liquid multi.  Since I am being so fussy lately, I am going to start trying out the rest of my protein samples from when I was drinking them (I never found one I liked).

My doc said to take a prenatal vitamin and 800 mg of folic acid, in addition to my chewable centrum and the other vitamins I take.   I also take 1500 mg's a day of Calcium Citrate (split up in 500 mg doses 3x a day).   He said I'll need to have blood labs done every 3 months to check vitamin levels too.   I am averaging 50-70 gms of protein a day and get that from food and my doctor is fine with that.   I would do the protein shakes if you think you need more protein, but ask your doctor.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

Thank you. I am going to try and get more protein. Maybe try and drink a glass of warm milk before bed...with a bit of chocloate syrup for flavor (cant stand plain milk). It can boost my calories, calcium, and protein...three birds killed with one stone.

When I was pregnant (high risk) with my last child I called the nurse line a couple times a week.  I wrote my questions down and called when I had 3 or 4 questions.  It went something like this:  "Nurse line, this is Becky."  I would then respond, "Hey, Becky, this is LeJoy."  There was no need for my last name or my medical ID number or for me to verify my address or anything.

I think you should put the number on speed dial and call it often.  These are questions that are valid and that you should get a professional opinion of.  No shame in asking.

As far as my two cents goes, I think that there are a variety of fish that are fine and others that are not and to be honest, I can't remember which is which.

Likewise, I agree with the higher protein and calcium people.  You will be needing a lot, so the shakes won't hurt.

For your vitamins, you can get really nice prenatal vitamins at http://www.puritan.com/multivitamins-067/prenatal-vitamins-0 03700?searchterm=prenatal&rdcnt=1

They have a wonderful blend for a very affordable price.  Unless you need liquid.  This is a pill, but you only need to take one.

Good luck!

Yes you r right. I am going to call them on Monday. I am going to try shakes again starting tomorrow (I need to dig up my samples). I just hope I can gag them down...I've never been able to find one I like.

The prenatal I have now has almost exact numbers compared to the ones your link led to. Does that mean I only need 1 a day or do I still need to take 2 a day?

Oh and does anyone take any calcium pills they recommended that are not horse pills? My scedule is starting to get more hectic and would like to transfer from liquid.

Swanson health has a Liquid Calcium with Vitamin D.  It has 100 soft gels that are 1,000 mg for only $5.66.

I think you would only have to take 1 if it's the same as the one in my link because that one says 1 a day.

I really like the Pure Protein brand of Whey Powder.  Target has a huge container for $17.99
