Concerned, with questions
Hey all, I'm newly pregnant and have a few concerns. I spoke with my dietician who told me to shoot for 1500 calories a day. Ladies, I'm trying hard and barely hitting 900. Suggestions? Everyone laughs and tells me to eat a candybar, too bad I'm a RNY'er and can't just do that, huH? :O) I'm scared that this little one is going to suffer because of me not being able to get enough in.
Also, what recommendations did your docs make? Other than the increasing calorie thing, my surgeon/dieticians didn't have any suggestions. I'm taking 2 prenatals a day along with my other vits. I am already a little anemic, so I'm considering starting on an iron supplement. What other words of wisdom can you share?
Thanks,
Melissa

HI! I also just found out that I am expecting, and am also due in April!! My NUT told me to aim for about 1400-1500 calories, which I must admit at the moment I have no problem reaching . I feel constantly hungry and am sticking to my plan just eating little and often! Someone suggested to me to try adding a glass of milk to up the calories if you can tolerate it! My NUT also told me to add carbs back in to avoid ketosis (which is bad for baby). NUT also suggested sticking to protein first, lots of fruits and vegetables, and trying for more dairy products which are mostly good sources of protein and will help with your calorie intake!
All NUTs are different though and will offer different advice. You will get some great advice on here! I've asked a few questions so far and have had brilliant answers!!
Good luck!

Add in things like a higer percentage milk - go from skim to 1 or 2%, eat full fat cheese, higher fat yogurt, whole grain breads and crackers. Add in another snack if you needs to. If you are having protein shakes add things to them like yogurt, ice cream or peanut butter. These are things that my NUT reccomended because they had me at 2000 calories!! I actually laughed at her! lol
best of luck and hope that this helps!

I am eating every 2-3 hours to get in all I can. Its not so easy but I find a way to do it. I do feel hungry often so that helps. I have done well with that. I added bread so I eat turkey sandwhiches a lot. Its just learning to add more and eat like normal which is not easy at all! Just do your best and thats a big thing. I like the candy bar thing but thats a just wasted calories that wont help you or baby!! Made me laugh this morning though so thats a good thing. :) Good luck to you!!

Add a handful of nuts. Cashews were my fave and it ups the calories quick, it's got protein and good fats.
I take one extra iron pill every other day (every day and I'm plugged to my ears - constipated!) and had borderline anemia pre-pregnancy. My labs were great and I'm carrying twins now.
The baby probably won't suffer but you might. Just be sure to add some easy but not junkie calories like the nuts, add an avocado to your salad. I eat eggbeaters with shredded cheese...the cheese can add up calories but I'm mixing it with protein so it works!
Good luck to you!
