When does the baby absorb the nutrients/food from Mom?
So I am almost 6 weeks pg now and had a question, so I thought maybe someone here would know the answer. After we have RNY, does the baby get the food BEFORE the mother malabsorbs it from the RNY or after? I mean it's safe to have a baby after RNY and many women have gone on to have healthy babies post op, so I was wondering when the baby absorbs the nutrients and vitamins. I am taking a centrum chewable and all my other vitamins, and have added 800 mcg of folic acid and a prenatal at night (for a few weeks now), now that I'm pg.
Anyone know? Has your doctor told you about this? TIA!

Not sure if I am going to answer this correctly but will give it a whirl. According to my OB he said that 12 weeks and prior the baby is being nourished by the placenta after that the baby is getting its nutrients from us and what we eat. If I understood him correctly. I'm hoping someone else will read this and respond. Good luck and Congrats!!

Not sure but my OB and surgeon assured me that they are so tiny that they don't need hardly anything right now (in your case). They are the size of a grain of rice! However, don't start losing weight if you can help it. They told me all I needed was to switch to a prenatal and keep up on everything else. Prenatals have enough folic - and all my labs were great even being just 4 months post-op when I got pregnant. I'm taking folic and iron every-other-day this time 'round just because I'm pregnant with twins.

ok, i asked the nurse at my bariatric doctor's office and this is what she emailed me. I'm pretty happy with the answer too! This is for anyone who is curious about getting pg post op too, just FYI:
The baby is fed nutrients from the mother's bloodstream. Nutrients are put into the bloodstream all along the GI tract. Also, there is only a small amount of malabsorption in gastric bypass. Hence, it's not a simple black and white answer.
What you need to remember: You are eating for one, not two. You need to take your supplements daily (as we have discussed), and stay hydrated. Day in and day out, healthy babies are born to women post gastric bypass. If you do what we recommend, I do not have one worry in the world; baby, and you, will be just fine.
