Dumping Issues...GD Test

So...since my surgery in April '07 I have not had too many issues with dumping but since being pregnant (really the last 2 weeks) I have been having symptoms increasingly worse every time I eat anything remotely carby-sugary...Because of this I have decreased my sugar and carbs dramatically trying to counteract it. I hate the feeling and I will do what I can to not have it!

Question is...I talked to my OB about the GD test. She dismissed my concern over dumping by telling me that she has several women take the test the week before (she was talking to me) and they had no problems. I am severly afraid of taking this test and bottoming out or passing out...She said well you begin to tolerate more things by the 28th week which is when the test will be given. HOW do i REFUSE to take the test? I am not a pushy person but this really concerns me. I do not want to put my baby through the test nor me and am really afraid of how I will react to it...

What did you ladies do? I have read many entries here about the jellybean or the prandial (not sure what that one is) and am willing to research all I can to give her accurate information about WLS patients and the affects of the GD test.

thanks for your help ladies!

~Flora

All I have to do is fast and go into the lab and get blood drawn then go eat, wait an hour, then go back and get blood drawn again. It seems pretty darn easy to me! Maybe you could get your surgeon or your surgeons nurse to type something up to give to your OB so they can fully understand what dumping is and how awful it is and why they should test you a different way. I got lucky and my OB didn't even question me about it. I would stand your ground on this if I were you though! You're the patient and they should listen to you!

You need to insist on the post prandial test. (fasting test, eat regular breakfast, then another blood draw an hour after last bite) My sugar levels also change dramatically during pg and the sugar test would have made me so super sick. I agree to get a note from your surgeon saying you are not allowed the test if your ob is still that ignorant. They really just need to know that your insulin is kicking in after you eat. Another thing you could do is just get a glucosometer and check your sugars for a week or so, fasting and an hour after each meal.

I also wanted to mention that although sugar/carbs makes you feel crappy... you have to find good carbs that you can tolerate, balance them with some protein and eat them. It is really bad for baby for you to go into ketosis from lack of carbs during pg. I eat a corn tortilla with melted cheese, a half a bagel with peanut butter, a serving of fruit with a string cheese. You get the idea. Good luck. Shari

Thanks Shari, I should have added that I do great with fruits and things like that. I am majorly craving peaches lol I will do my best to refuse the test...I am just not good at insisting lol But maybe my Momma instinct will kick in and I will be able to! lol

I agree with the above. do not do the gd test.  I flat refused but they also said they'd never have asked me to do it.

my OB's were ignorant so I took the test I am 3 years post op and sadly tolerate sugars! Now here is the thing I did fine I though I would become super shaky and pass out too! I did great had the blood work done and then KABOOM the bottom fell out and I had major dumping, luckily for me the blood work was done prior and I didn't have to do it again!
I sadly am 13 hours away from my surgeon or  anyone to be on the WLS side, so if you could get a note from your surgeon that would be your best bet!
Good luck!!

I have already told mine I wont take the test. They said they will just find a fasting way or something else. So all I had to do was say no way. They cant make you do anything you are not comfortable with. I say tell them no and find me a different way. They can do it easy!! Good luck to you!!

DO NOT TAKE THE GD TEST which involves drinking the liquid syrup!!!! Mention to your OB your concerns and that you were told NOT to take it, why would you want to risk becoming very ill???  WHen you go in .. they will have you go in FASTING, take a blood sugar draw, have you go eat a balanced breakfast and come back 2 hours later to take another blood sugar draw!! That will have the absolute same results with NO side effects :)
I am 37 weeks pregnant, got pregnant 9 months post op...this is coming from a pro!!! They cannot make you drink that syrup...
Do the fasting test and you will be fine!!
GOOD LUCK & CONGRATS!!!

Tell your OB you are not those women who took that test last week. Just because other women didn't have issues does not mean you won't especially if you know you are more sensitive since being pregnant.

I would do like the other women said and ask your surgeon to send a letter  to your OB to explain why you CANT take the GD test.

If you drink the syrup and then dump, the test won't be accurate. You can not take this type of test. YOu have to do fasting blood test.
