So, i thought the pregnancy after WLS forum would be a good place.
I had my surgery on january 29th 2008,  18 months ago, I found out yesterday that i am 6 weeks pregnant. Since it was friday i couldnt get a hold of my surgeon. Anyone have any advice or anything they can tell me. I really dont know what to do or where to start. I know i need to find a doctor and all that stuff but other than that i am lost. I've never been pregnant before, i am excited but mostly SCARED TO DEATH...
So yeah if anyone can lead me in any sort of direction i would really appreciate it.
Thanks
Robin

First - congratulations on your pregnancy! Now get yourself on a really good vitamin regimen, whether it's prenates or in addition to your post-op vites.

I have a 5 year old but that was way before WLS so a whole different set of rules apply (I assume). You'll get a lot of great advice here and meet some really super ladies. Welcome ....

first... congrats!
seconds... relax... take a deep breath... everything will be fine... switch to a prenatal instead of your normal multi... add some carbs to your diet if your not already eating them... ketosis is very bad for baby brain...
third.. take another deep breath.. everything will be fine

try to pick an ob that has had some experience with WLS patients... you will not be high risk because of WLS

enjoy :)

Wonderful news, congratulations!!!

You've received some great advice here. Pregnancy after WLS has in fact been proven to be healthier and lower risk than pregnancy when morbidly obese. Take a deep breath and know that already you've given your little one a huge gift by carrying him/her while your body is healthier than 18 mos ago.

A few suggestions:
1. Call your nutritionist and ask what a PG-specific diet should be for your weight, time out from WLA' etc. You don't necessarily need more calories in the 1st trimester, but will likely need to increase your carbs and protein grams.
2. Water, water, water. The more fluids the better, especially if vomiting becomes an issue.
3. Vitamins - be religious about taking them and have your OB draw frequent labs to check your levels. Iron, B and D levels in particular, as levels can fluctuate often during PG. Add folic acid and more calcium, but your nut.Dr should be able to help.
4. RELAX and ENJOY! Fatigue and morning sickness can feel overwhelming at first. Listen to your body, allow yourself naps and know that you and baby will be fine if all you can manage to eat is tomato sandwiches or squash (my first PG cravings).

I wish you the very best and look forward to sharing in your journey.

Hugs,

Hi Robin,

Congratulations on your pregnancy!! The others have given you great advice.  I just wanted to share that I got pregnant 3 months after having my RNY.  It was not planned but my surgeon was wonderul and worked closely with my OB.  The morning sickness or should I say all day sickness was rough but my doctor prescribed medicine for that and I did so much better.

I had the most healthiest pregnancy that I have ever had before WLS.  My baby was small at birth but heathy and she is 16 months old now.

You can read my profile and check out my journey.

You will do fantastic!

My surgeon immeiately put me on Vitron C iron pill one a day. I bought over the counter prenatals at Walmart by valley spring(name brand)  he also suggeste I take 1 folic acid additionally to my prenatal and a centrum daily (later I just took 1 prenatal at morning and 1 at night.  He told to take a  vitamin D daily additional to my 2 calcium citrate daily, vitamin B complex 1 a day and my B-12 shot monthly.   All my levels were great throughout my pregnancy thank goodness.  Just remember that even if you are feeling sick you NEED to take your vitamins No matter what!!!

Best wishes!  If I can be of any help do not hesitate to contact me.

I am who I am and accept my feelings wholeheartedly.
