Hello I'm pregnant

Hi my name is Lanie, I'm 36 and had RNY on 6/11/08 I lost 114 lbs, I weigh 132 now.  For about 3-4 months I have been throwing up and tired.  Spotting for about 1 month, I thought it was due to the weight loss.  Anyhow I bought a pregnancy test yesterday and it's positive.  Hubby and I are very happy.  This will be baby #2 for me, I was never sick with the first baby so I didn't make the connection.  I just have a couple questions am I high risk because of my age and rny?  Do I give my OB the surgeon's number and have them work together?  Do I continue to get check ups with both?  I've been taking 2 prenatals a day in addition to my calcium and b12, but do I need liquid prenatals?  I had my labs done last month and they were great thank goodness.  Thanks for your help!

Your age makes you more of a risk than the surgery.

Make sure, with your sickness, that you are taking B1, or thiamin.  B1 will deplete very quickly in postop patients that are vomitting, and this is a VERY BAD THING.

Go get a full panel from your OB -- iron, ferritin, tibc, hct, hgb, b1, b12, folate, 0,25(OH)d, pth..  these will help determine what you need.

No, you don't need liquid prenates.  Make sure you are taking 2000mg of calcium citrate now that you are pregnant.

Oh, and congrats.

Thank you I will write all that down and take it to my OB on Monday.  Can you tell me how much B1 I should be taking?  My prenatals have 1.8mgs.  I am taking 2 prenatals a day.
Thanks a bunch!

Until you get your labs, that should be fine.  But get those labs ASAP with that vomitting.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

Andrea gave you great advice re: labs.  I continued to attend my regular RNY check-ups and OB check-ups.  Both drew labs, though the OB drew labs more frequently due to pregnancy so soon after WLS and extreme Hyperemesis.  Though I tried to get them to work together, it worked out fine independently.  My supplements were adjusted many times throughout the pregnancy.   Chewable/tablets were just fine, except if my levels dipped too low, and then I received injections.

This is a great forum with lots of women at all different stages in motherhood.  I hope the morning sickness gets better soon and I look forward to sharing in your journey.

Hugs,

Jo

Congrats!! I know our OB does not consider high risk because of surgery alone. That usually makes you healthier than when obese. I have different issues though that have made me high risk one being my age since I will be 35 when My baby girl is born. I wish you all the luck!!
