HELP! BM's and Diaper Rashes

I feel so bad for my little girl.  She has had a horrible time with diaper rashes the last 2 months or so and I just couldn't imagine having to deal with the pain from them.  I have noticed something though, she gets them when she poops A LOT!  Yes, Libby is a poop making machine.  Memorial day weekend she actually pooped 9 times in ONE day.  It sucked, we were out camping.  She never has formed poop (not sure if that is normal or not but the doctor didn't seem too concerned, or at least that is what DH says).  If she sits in a poopy diaper longer than a few minutes her skin gets extremely red and irritated, and if you aren't careful cleaning her up then she starts to bleed.  I have no idea what to do.  We use ointments and creams and they help make them go away, but they just come back.  We don't always know that she pooped because she doesn't always smell and sometimes you don't see her grunting.  Plus, there are time she does it in the car and we have another 15 min to get home, well then her butt turns red.  Do you think I should be concerned that her poop is doing that to her bottom???  She poops 2-4 times a day so as you can imagine it is very hard to clear up when it happens.  She was so bad tonight that she screamed the entire time I changed her diaper, screamed in pain.  Then, when I gave her a bath (which she loves) she wouldn't sit her butt completely down in the water and cried when I tried to get her to sit down.  What do I do??  We have nystatin and that does nothing.  We have desitin, balmex, butt paste, and a&d.  They work but take A LOT and take a few days to make it go away completely.  I just want it to stop happening. :(

Do you use the creams only when there is a problem or do you use them all the time? My son Nate was alot like this, and at every diaper change I would give him a good coat of Aquafore, even if he wasn't red at all and that seemed to do the trick in keeping the rash from coming back. Good luck, I hope you find something that works, both for your sake and hers!

We use the creams 100% of the time when she is red and probably 50% of the time when she isn't.  I used to be really good about putting a&d on her every time we changed her diaper, but that was before any of this started.  I think I might have to give the aquafore a try though.  Thanks.

I use Aquafore for EVERYTHING, even now that they are older. I think it work's better then Neosporin and use it on cuts and scrapes, burns, and even on the rough skin on my feet. It's a bit pricey, but a little goes a long way. I was thinking about it last night, and the other thing we did for Nate was to stop using wipes, it seemed that they hurt him more then helped. I made up a tub of water with baby wash, a tiny bit of baby oil and I believe it was teatree oil (to keep stuff from growing in the water) and then soaked paper towels in it, and used them instead of wipes. Kept from making his butt worse AND saved money.

Emad had this issue when he had a bout of diarrhea really bad....9 times in a few hours...he was raw and red and a screaming machine...took him to the doctor, ruled out major illness, stomach bug, and they advised to wash him with a mild baby soap and water, avoid wipes because they can make it worse, and then use the Aquafor liberally....it works well and it does not wipe off easily as other creams can..it is more vaseline type consistency. I put that on a few times in the day and by the next day he is a bit better and hen heals.

Yikes, I couldn't imagine having to give a baby a bath every time they pooped!  Although, if it works then I am game.  I will give that and the aquafor a try, thank you :-)

This sounds exactly like what happened with my daughter. We were advised to use the butt creme from our doctor, which helped but she would also bleed and pooped alot too. We could hardly get her clean cause she would be so stiff and screaming. We changed brands of diapers and the rashes weren't as bad. I found that when we used parent's choice brand from Wal-mart, the rashes were horrible. Luvs seemed to be much better for her rashes. I hope you can get her bottom cleared up soon. It so sad to see them in pain.

We strictly use Huggies and have never had an issues.  Wouldn't it be weird for her to start having problems with them now?  We haven't changed wipes either, have always used Target brand.  It just makes my heart hurt seeing her in so much pain :(

I would also clean her up using a warm water butt bath instead of wipes for a while.   Obviously you are not going to be able to do this when you are out and about, but when you are home try it.  It's going to be a little more time consuming, but we did it with Dylan when she had major diaper rash issues.   Our ped even had us leave a diaper off her for 24 hours.  Um, yeah, that was messy and not fun.

I give two thumbs up to the Aquaphor as well.  Love the stuff.

It actually sounds like Libby has an allergy to something.   Could be the diapers, the wipes, or something she's eating.

Eek!  How the hell do you keep a diaper off of an infant for 24 hours???  I can't even tell you how long it has been since I have been in my home for a full 24 hour period.  Sad huh?  We are always on the go.  It is craziness.
I have to go to the pharmacy today so I will defiinitely try the aquaphor.  I was thinking about the allergy thing too but the only thing she has had new lately are teething biscuit thingys.  I do know that she gets diaper rash from Oatmeal, but I know I threw the oatmeal away that we had.  That makes me wonder if the teething biscuits have oatmeal in them???  Hmmm
