Want stories of infertility "cured" by WLS!

I will be having RNY in 3 weeks, and am just wanting a little hope and encouragement to hold on to (as cold feet and the jitters are setting in!).

I've not been diagnosed w/ PCOS, but I seem to have all the symptoms of it, and it was my fertility Dr. who suggested WLS.

I just want to hear stories from you ladies who were infertile, but after WLS were able to conceive. Thanks for the encouragement!

I had 3 children, the last was born in 1992. For 12 years we didn't use birth control and I never had another child. We were sure it was my husband because he had a vein burst in his scrotum. I had WLS in July of 2003 and concieved in March of 2004. I also got pregnant again 2 1/2 years later having unprotected sex only once while in Niagara Falls. The only reason my last 2 children are here is WLS. I know it for certain.

Good luck!

We tried for over 8 years to get pregnant and finally adopted our oldest from Korea almost 5 years ago.  I had surgery when he was 18 months old, not for fertility reasons but it was in the back of my mind that maybe it would happen.  But I wasn't going to hold my breath!

I found out that I was pregnant just 5 months after surgery.  We forgot the condom ONCE.  I still managed to gain enough weight to have a 10.5 lb baby boy who is healthy as an ox!  Not one complication related to WLS!  Now, to our surprise (hubby was supposed to be infertile!) we are 21.5 weeks pregnant with twin baby girls!

It happens more often than you think!  And people tend to get pregnant almost too easy, a few times a week I see a post on her "Help!  4 months post op and pregnant!!"  However, some still stuggle getting pregnant and staying pregnant.

If I had it my way, we would have waited until I was 12-18 months post op as I hadn't lost another pound since that pregnancy.

Good luck!!!

Hi! Before surgery we tried for two years to get pregnant, and only succeeded after aggresive fertility treatments. After the triplets where born we never used any protection, at all, ever and I never got pregnant. Had the lap band surgery, lost 80 lbs and my periods got really regular and I am now 32 weeks pregnant with the baby that the doc's told me would NEVER happen!

Before I had surgery I never tried to get pregnant so I'm not completely sure I would have had difficulty getting pregnant but I can say that when I was in a serious relationship I was not very careful. We always used the "pull and pray" method and I never even had a pregnancy scare. Then after my surgery we used birth control and condoms and one night when I was between birth controls the condom fell off. I even took the morning after pill and BAM preggo! We are super excited because we did want a baby but I of course planned on waiting the required 12-18 months. I do think that my surgery is the reason I am pregnant today!

I was told by my doctors that I would have a lot of trouble getting pregnant or that I might not be able to have kids at all.

I was told I had PCOS and I also had a hormone imbalance having to do with my pituitary gland.

I got WLS, got to goal and I got pregnant the month after i stopped using birth control.  I thought it would take at least 6 months if at all! So, yeah I was shocked.

Hi Jess,

Good luck with your upcoming surgery.  It was the best decision I ever made.  Although I was never "officially" diagnosed with PCOS either, I also had all the symptoms.  At 260 pounds, it took us 18 months of steady TRYING to get preggo before it finally happened.  And we had my beautiful son Jamie who is now 7.5 yrs old and healthy.  At 145 pounds, 8 months after my WLS, when my weightloss stablized, my surgeon gave us the green light to try to conceive again.  My clock wasn't ticking - it was screaming!  We got off of birth control in May 2006, had a period in June 2006 and pregnant in July.  Literally, it only took one month.  I don't know if it is because of the loss of excess weight or just the fact that I was eating healthy and exercising regularly...just in better health all around.  Jeremy was born in 2007.  I lost the baby pounds and then gained 30 pounds.  So I've been stalled at 175 for a year now.

Wait until your surgeon says you are safe to get preggo.  And never stray from the WLS food "rules"; once you break that habit, it's easy to fall back into pre-WLS habits.  Best wishes on your journey!

First thing I want to say is good luck with your surgery!  It is an awesome ride that you will be on for the rest of your life!  I have/had issues with TTC before my RNY.  I had lots of cysts on my ovaries and in December of 08 I had a large fybroid tumor removed from my uterus (the size of a 4 month pregnancy/ baseball/softball)  I am now 16 weeks and 3 days preggers and loving every minute of it.  With out the RNY, I'm not sure where I would be.  Just wanted to share my little story with you... Good Luck!

For over 5 years - I wasn't trying to conceive by any means but was not taking any precautions to not become pregnant. I had WLS (not to have children but to get in better health) and ended up pregnant after 5 months. While I'm carrying a perfectly healthy baby boy who is due any day now - remember to wait until you get clearance from your WL Surgeon before TTC.

Good luck with both the surgery and TTC in 12-18 months!
