WLS = Preggers???
Hello!
I'm still in the planning stages of my surgery... hopefully I'll be having it either early September, or mid December... trying to plan around mine and my farmer husband's schedule is tough! Yeah... and thats without children!!! :)
Anyway... I've been overweight all my life, and used to want to lose the pounds so I could wear the same size jeans as my girlfriends... or to impress some guy... But now that I'm married, and wanting to start a family soon, I want to become as healthy as possible... especially for my future babies... which has landed my 48bmi butt on the surgery list! My doctor has recommended the vertical sleeve, instead of the lapband or Y... So I'm wondering if any of you had WLS for this reason?
To become pregnant? To have a healthier pregnancy? Had the sleeve too? How long did you wait to try to conceive? Any complications? Any worries with the smaller stomach/nutrients with becomming pregnant?
Any insight would be wonderful! I'm also very new to this board, so I'm learning as I go.
The way I figure it... I can be scared of surgery and wonder if there will be future complications, and HAVE the surgery... Or I can wimp out and almost guarantee problems, especially with pregnancy.
Thank you so much!

I had RNY in Jan and accidentally got pregnant by April. OOPS! Weight loss can make a woman very fertile so be careful! I have had some issues w/ getting all of my protein in. They bumped me up from 60 to 80. I couldn't even get the 60 in before so I have a hard time with this. I have not gained an ounce. I have actually lost about 60+ lbs since I became pregnant. I usually have little energy but over all I feel pretty good. I got the surgery for my future children. I wanted to have a healthy pregnancy and be an active mom. I totally understand where you are coming from! I don't regret my decision for one second!
I don't know anything about the sleeve. I had wls to help with fertility as I had pcos and was infertile before wls. For me it did the trick. I am now pg with #2. I didn't have any complications during pregnancy. They did monitor my vitamin levels closely and I did have low Iron, but that is kinda normal for anyone during pg. The only complications I had were after my cesarian I got a severe infection due to my hanging skin from losing so much weight. For gastric bypass they suggest waiting at least 18 months to try, not sure about the sleeve. Good luck. Shari
I am like the other girls. I could not get pregnant (or, if I did, couldn't stay pregnant) before WLS. Without planning, we got pregnant 4 months after RNY. TOTAL SHOCK! I had no issues at all during my pregnancy due to WLS. I even managed to gain 50 lbs being so early out AND had a 10.5 lb baby boy. And I couldn't eat more than 1000 calories a day!! So, no absorption issues there! Now, I'm 21 weeks pregnant with twins (another surprise and not planned) at have gained 18 lbs.
Good luck! My diabetes was in MUCH better order during my pregnancy and I didn't need any insulin while pregnant also.

Like you, I was overweight my entire life. At my heaviest, I was 373 and day of surgery was 334. I lost downto 184 (after becoming pregnant) was around 196 or so when I got pregnant.
We ttc for 5 years prior (did fertility drugs, went to RE, etc) with no success. I also had PCOS and irregular periods. My RE recommended WLS and I was against it for so long. I finally saw "the light" and went for it. I will NEVER regret it.
I started ttc about 1 year after surgery. They recommend 12-18 months or when you get to a stable weight. i got pregnant about 14 months after surgery and am currently 36 weeks pregnant with a little boy. I truly believe I would not have gotten pregnant without WLS. I have had NO complications with the pregnancy with the exception of my Rheumatoid Arthritis (I had to go off my RA meds due to being pregnant).
I've had NO bp issues and no vitamin issues. baby boy is already over 5 pounds and I still have appx 4 weeks to go. My OB is well aware of my WLS and monitors my levels accordingly.
I've also only gained 25 pounds so far--great according to the OB.
I wish you much luck in your TTC journey. Be sure to come back once you get that much wanted BFP!
*hugs*

It's a BOY!
First of all, CONGRATULATIONS on that baby boy! And I'm sooo new to all of this, sorry if I sound dumb, but... what is BFP?
Secondly, thank you so much for the words of encouragement! I have my consultation tomorrow, so I'm hoping it goes well. :) Then hopefully I'll have the surgery by the end of this year... and by the beginning of 2011, I'll be ttc! Yay!
:)
Have a great night!
Good luck with your consultation today! Be sure to update us on how it goes.
Sorry about the BFP - it is BIG FAT POSITIVE! When you tried to get pregnant (TTC) as long as we did, you automaticaly think in acronyms. *HAHA*
Good luck again and thanks for the congrats!
