As long as you assign people desserts or sides - or main if you're not fixing the main - I think it's a great idea.  The only reason I say assign desserts or sides is so you don't end up w/all of one or the other...Personally...I love potlucks, especially if you have a lot of people, so  you have a good variety of food w/o having to cook it all yourself!

Whever I had a family gathering we all bring something.  I think it's a great idea and more economical! I do the main course and let everyone bring sides, desserts and appetizers and I assign which of the 3 that way it is spread out. Also, if someone can't make it at the last minute I'm not stuck without the main course!

My family does potluck  for everything so I say GO FOR IT!!! I would ask everyone what they will bring as one of the other poster mentioned that you dont want three of the same people to bring the same thing.

We are having a potluck for our son's 2nd birthday.  For his first we catered a party with the help of a chef friend and a lot of elbow grease of our own...but this year my husband has been out of work for 9 weeks and we just can't afford it.  We can't even afford to get a present for the party but it's going to be ok because this won't last forever and we are pregnant and due in 16 weeks so it's just all par for the course.

  Be Blessed!
