Doulas
Hi Jackie!
Yes!!! We have a doula who has become part of the family! I love her, and she is worth her weight in gold! In terms of support, knowledge, and advocacy, she has been irreplaceable, and I would highly reccomend the services of a dou;a/midwife to anyone! Many of my friends have also used doulas lately as there seems to be a strong movement recently to get back to unmedicated births and the midwifery model rather than the doctor model of labor and birth. If I had the time and the resources, I would LOVE to consider becoming a doula! Good luck!

That seems to be the going rate! You get a lot for that though. Most will go to like Dr appointments with you, the delivery and then after you are home will come stay with you for a day or two. They help if you are breast feeding and general newborn care. But it is pretty spendy. I know a lot will lower the rate if finances are a issue. Plus new Doula's need to be at 3 births before being licensed and will do it for free!!

Of course you can ask! We paid $800 in three installments and she is worth every penny. She has done no less than 5 home visits so far, she's available by phone 24/7, and when I got in my car accident last week, she was there at the hospital with me before my husband! She provides research materials, has come to two doctor's appointments, and will also visit us no less than three times once the baby comes. She will, or course, come to the house once I am in labor (please God, let that be any day now) and stay til we go to the hospital then be with us after the birth til the baby feeds, I get to eat and go to the bathroom, and everyone is resting comfortably.
That's the going rate in this area. Some doulas around here are certified to to doppler and cervical checks, and they seem to charge about $100 more, but I am really comfortable with ours just how she is.
Good luck!

I plan to hire one IF I ever get pregnant. I am a big supporter of doulas even if you want medicated birth - it takes some of the pressure off of dad as well, and gives great comfort to mom just having someone there exclusively for support and advocacy.
