Pregnancy & Weight Gain Issues..HELP!

Hi Friends,

Let me introduce myself, my name is Julie and I don't have any kids, but I wanted to ask you all about having children after WLS. I have been on the fence about the whole pregnancy thing after WLS. I had my RNY on 1/16/2008 and have lost so far 164lbs. I know, I am scared to death to gain any of that weight back, but I do see myself in the future being a mom. What I need help on, is the weight gain issues due to pregnancy. How did you deal with the weight gain while being pregnant and how tough is it to take off the weight after the delivery? This is something that I am having mixed emotions on. I am 33 years old and some days I feel as though my clock is ticking away and some days I think about the weight gain and want to throw that darn biological clock out the window! I know the outcome of the weight gain, is a beautiful baby, but emotionally how do you deal?

If anyone has any advice or has been through this, please share!

While hoping i dont get flamed this is my opinion and mine only.

If you really want a child.. Then start trying.

While wishing i would have waited to get pregnant, because im not a year out of surgery yet. I would NEVER wish or be upset i did get pregnant when i did. God gave me a gift of this tool and what i chose to do with it is up to me. With that being said God also gave me this gift of having another baby. Im very lucky.

If you feel that your not READY? or dont want to gain weight then maybe the issuse isnt having kids its with yourself and your new image you have for yourself. I would think about that first before wanting to bring another life into this world.

Now am i upset ive gained two lbs!! YUP!! But did i get over it.. Yep.. in a few days... after losing weight every month for 12 plus months its hard to see the scale rise. But in the end i will have   healthy happy baby.

I personally think you sound a little selfish.. But im pregnant and kina emotional as well.

I totally understand the emotional feelings, I am a girl, too!!..lol But as far as being selfish, lets just say that's a NO!!!! But again that is your personal oppinion and you have your right to that. Just remember words come across differently on print then they do in real conversation. I just don't how you can think I sound selfish when all you know about me is a post regarding how do you deal with the weight gain after WLS? This post had NOTHING to do with not being grateful for the gifts that we are given in our life!

I hope I am not coming across, too harsh! It's just that this is a question, I have been thinking about for awhile. I was at my support group last night and someone had brought in their baby and I guess it really got me thinking about the whole issue of the weight gain thing. I do know that in order to have a healthy baby, weight gain is required and un-avoidable, but when you have worked so hard emotionally and physically to reach goal, how do you cope with such a life changing event & gaining the weight? We all know that super models almost never look like they put on weight after having a baby, damn Heidi Klum!  LOL But for us real people it will happen.

I also want to say, Congratulations on your upcoming arrival & I wish you nothing but the best for a safe & happy delivery of your little one!

this is my thought. If i put on 10 lbs after having this baby is it really all that bad. I mean hell i got a beautiful baby and more love in the my life. And what is 10lbs gonna do to me .. I have already lost 130 plus!!!

I think its a fair trade!!!

Plus it gives me a reason to work harder!!!

You are right, that is a fair trade. What's ten or twenty pounds compared to a lifetime of joy!

Thank you for being honest. Atleast you know the reason you gained it back and that is a step in taking it off again.

Hi Julie,

I knew that I wanted at least one more when I had surgery.  I figure if I watch what I eat, my tool will be there after I deliver.  At this point I have lost 2lbs, in previous pregnancies I would have already gained 10lbs at this point.

Dealing with the biological clock is aggravating. Good Luck.

Emilie

Thanks, I do think everyone so far has given me some good things to think about. It is true, we have been given this tool and it's up to us on how we want to work it. I think the joys of motherhood must out weigh the little weight gain that is required. Yep, this darn clock is driving me nuts, I guess that is why I haven't made any major decisions in my life so far. I want to be sure of what I am getting myself into to. Being a mom is a full time job, that you can't clock out of and there are no raises except for the tons of hugs & kisses.

I had the same thoughts as you did.  I was worried about gaining weight.  I had my insides re-arranged to be healthy and to have children.  The weight gain from being pregnant scared the hell out me.  I gained 30lbs with Caleb and lost all of it.  I have put 10 lbs back on, but that is me and I know how to get it off.  Just haven't got there yet.  My OB was on me about my weight gain.  It wasn't because I was getting big or unhealty, but he knew I had worked hard to lost my weight 1st off and did not want me to get back into bad habits.  To the fact that he told me that if I did no****ch it he would not let me deliver...LOL.

WLS is a mental and physical.  To me know matter how much I weigh or what pant size I am - I still some times see a fat girl.  It is all mental for me.  That has been my biggest strugle since WLS in 2004.

I wish you the best in your journey and sorry so long.
