Cooper Sucks

And sucks and sucks.  If I would let him the boy would have a bottle or boob attached to him 24/7 !!!

Most of the time he's not drinking.... he doesn't suck hard enough on the nipple of the bottle to get anything.... it's more of a comfort thing?

So I started giving him a pacifier which helps --- but he keeps spitting it out.  (When he keeps it in it stops the fussiness).

My question / concern is --- is it a bad habit to get him used to having something in his mouth now?  I feel like when I give him a bottle every 1 hour (or every 45 minutes) I am doing him harm later in life....like creating some sort of oral-fixation or obsessive eating.....

Tell me I'm worrying too much !?!?

We have his 1 month appointment on Monday so we'll see how much he has gained.  He gained from 6 lbs 11 oz when he left the hospital to 7lbs 8 oz in FOUR DAYS !!!!!!!!!  The doctor said that is 3x the normal weight gain - but no worries.

I know he has gained since that doctor's appointment.  He is in size 1/2 diapers and fitting into size 3-6 months clothes (okay, they are a bit big)

Anyway...just wondered on thoughts of if it's too early to start "good" eating habits.  I don't mind giving him 4 oz every 2 hours --- but I'd prefer not to give him 1oz every hour as that means he is constantly eating and that can't be good???  (And besides that is a pain for me)

Thanks in advance!

Cindy

I really don't have advice on the "sucking" thing. But great pic!

When life hands you lemons, ask for tequila & salt and give me a call!

IMO I think sucking alot is normal for this age and he is so little he doesn't know what he wants or when he just knows what makes him comfy! have you tried a pacifier? I mean that may work if you want to stretch out the feedings, and soothe his sucking need.
I think worrying just comes with being a mommy! It sounds like all is good from what you wrote!

My baby was extremely sucky.   I stressed out about it at first because I thought he wasn't getting enough breast milk.   All he wanted to do was suck.  My laxation nurse told me to give him a pacifer.   She said some babies are just sucky babies. :)    He did out grow the sucking and at 6 months didn't want the pacifer anymore.
Babies also will spit the pacifer out.  That is very common.  It doesn't mean he doesn't want it.  I just think there tongue pushes it out.
Hang in there!
He is adorable and I can't believe he is almost a month old!!!!

Keep trying different pacifiers until you find one that he likes.   Hannah like the cheap ones from the dollar store the best.  Well actually, she like using me as a pacifier the best lol.
He is so stinkin' cute!

Kellen was a sucker too.  BIG TIME.  I kept feeding him because he'd suck and suck and then he'd throw up because he didn't really want to eat, he wanted to suck!
We had the same problems with pacifiers popping out all night long.  Finally the MAM worked for us.  It's kind of bulbous on the end so I think it stuck in there a little better than the Avent, Playtex, and Soothie ones - at first.  He just couldn't get the hang of the NUK ones with the angled nipple.

No worries!  Kellen was weaned off the binky at 18 months old with no problems.  Although, it's been 4 months and all of a sudden he came into our room with one in his mouth last weekend.  We grabbed it out of his mouth and he started saying "BINKY! BINKY!"  We figured he forgot all about it! LOL!  NOPE!  But he hasn't asked for it since.  :)

Babies are born with a need to suck...better to soothe him than to over stuff him, I would think!

Good luck!
