I think it's a great positive thing :)

However, even though my DH brings in a 6 figure income we didn't have the extra $3,500 to fork out for the lab kit to collect the cord blood at the time of birth.

My OB has 3 kids, with his youngest being 4 years old and he didn't do it either.  Said he didn't think it was nessacary

I love the idea...and hope that your hospital can accept the donation w/o you having to fork over a hunk of money to do it.  I've also heard that if you have your baby boy circumcized, that they can use the foreskin to grow skin for burn centers...but when my son was born and I asked about that, the dr looked at me like I had grown an extra head all of a sudden...

I think not all hospitals are equipped or willing to do this. But I think if you can donate, and don't want to bank it yourself, that would be a great idea.

Personally I hope to find the money to bank it when I do get pregnant again. It's possible that your baby or another down the road may need it... Just wi**** wasn't so dang expensive!

For dontating you are not charged, but not all hospitals participate with this. For cord blood storing for a later use if needed for your family, i did not think it was very expensive at all. I received all the info and it was going to be a flat fee of $1,800, then $100 a year ( I think or every few months). My older son whom is 9 has a Blood Disorder, and that is really the only reason why i contemplated the cord blood storage at all. I was very serious about it, but after finding out more info i decided against it all.  Now the Cord Blood Company is a huge pain in the A$$, and call several times a week trying to talk me into doing it............especially since i am so close to my due date..........the phone calls keep coming 2-3X a week, lol
