Hello all.  I am new on here and just have a few questions on pregnancy after surgery.  I have one 2 year old and have been married for 9 months. I am beginning the surgery journey and am planning for a RNY . Can any one please give me their experience with pregnancy after this procedure. I know that I will have to wait at least 18 months post surgery and till I am at a stable weight.  I weighed 315 when I got pregnant with my daughter. I was actually beginning the WLS journey when I found out I was pregnant.
My OB/GYN originally told me to have my children prior to weight loss surgery because of malnutrition issues and haveing some patients that had painful pregnancies after surgery.  Did anyone run into these issues?? My husband and I  have come to the conclusion that it is more importain for me to be healthy to raise the daughter we have than to be dead set on having more children. Although we would like to have at least one child together after surgery. Any opinions and experiences are of help.

I am not sure what surgery you are planning on having but I got pregnant 2 years out and I have no malnutrition issues at all! I hear way more positive stories than negative as far as getting pregnant and having healthy pregnancies and babies after WLS. Just remember you will need to focus on having your surgery and losing the weight before coming pregnant. Good luck!

I am almost 8 and a half years post-op from having the DS, probably one of the more malabsorptive procedures out there.   I have 10 month old twins and another one on the way.   I had to malnutrition issues with the twins and to date I have no malnutrition issues with the latest.

Your OB/GYN is a prime example as to why it's our jobs to educate them on our surgeries.  9 times out of 10, they have no idea what the hell they are talking about when it comes to gastric bypass.

You will be fine to have children after your surgery, but just make sure to wait until your surgeon tells you it's ok to start TTC.  That can be 1-2 years, probably closer to 2.

I got pregnant 4 months after my RNY and still had a 10.5 lb baby boy - no absortbtion issues here!  LOL!  Now, I'm pregnant with twins and my OB says I'm doing GREAT with no extra supplimentation needed.
Pre-op I couldn't keep a healthy pregnancy to save my life...or even get pregnant.  Now, I seem to be fertile myrtle and have had NO issues regarding WLS.

Your surgeon just isn't educated enough...it's so much healthy to have babies when YOU are healthier...less chances of Gest Diabetes, Preclampsia, etc...

Good luck!
