Do they normally do an ultrasound at the first appt
My OB doesn't do a US until 10-12 weeks. Hopefully yours does them sooner!
Congrats on the pregnancy and that's going to be exciting to tell your 5 year old! Personally I would probably wait until after my first trimester just because they are so young that they wouldn't understand if God Forbid sometihng were to happen. I don't have any kids though so I could be totally off base. I had told my 11 year old cousin that I was pregnant right away, day of the positive test. She has been begging for a baby cousin since I got married 4 years ago. As I was sitting in the OB's office being told there was no baby she was all I could think of! She actually handled it better then anyone saying that it was better if the baby wasn't going to be perfect - broke my heart! Love that girl!!
I am sure that all will be fine with your pregnancy though! (sorry for the dark cloud - I am just feeling over cautious right now)

Tell the OB that you don't have ANY idea when your LMP was and you don't know how far along you are. That seems to work to get an US the first appt... We told Kaden when I was about 3-4 months along. For some kids thats way too early, too long to wait for something. He handled it fine. We tried to give him milestones to look forward to and got lots of "Big Brother " books about 6 months into it. Many people wait until they're showing to tell the older kids. Good luck whatever you decide!

Hi Shannon,
I think I missed your first post here, so congratulations on your pregnancy! I was fortunate to have ultrasounds with every pregnancy, but I think this was due to the fact that I was on fertility meds and had a history of m/c. Normal protocol for my OB is the first visit at 8 weeks gestation and no ultrasound until the second visit.
We waited to tell my 3 year old son until I was 4 months pg, due to prior m/c's. We gave him a "big brother" book and an ultrasound picture. He still didn't quite understand until we told him that Mommy had his baby brother or sister growing in her uterus. The day his sister was born, she gave him a book with pictures of our family, stories about how excited she was to meet him and a poem about being a big brother. With this pregnancy, we told both of the kids right away as I was ill from the start and hospitalized often. Each child was given a mini photo album that we added ultrasound pictures to and then a footprint and baby photo when Everett was born.
Congratulations again and I look forward to sharing in your journey!
Hugs,

HIJACK - I'm reading through posts right now, so don't know if you posted elsewhere...but wanted to ask how you're doing and how Everett is. I hope they finally figured out what was up with him and were able to treat it? Is he resting better and feeling better now? I'll keep reading posts and hope you let everyone know!

HI... i will be 27 when this baby is born... I also have a son that is 2 weeks from being 5 yrs old. After the first ultrasound at 8 weeks and saw the heartbeat (i had sone miscarriage last yr and told him too early). Then I explained it to him, that there was a baby in my tummy and we couldnt play rough anymore and he couldnt jump on my tummy anymore. But when it comes close to Christmas... we will have a baby here. He was SO EXCITED because he was feeling left out to be an only child... and he sees his cousins have siblings. He always talk about "Our baby". We talk about names and he goes to all my appointments to hear the heartbeat or see the ultrasounds. If he stays up late certain nights... we sit on the couch together in the dark and listen to the babys heartbeat on the home monitor thing. He LOVES it. Then he wants to listen to his heartbeat and tummy and my heartbeat. Its so Cute. :-) So when I told him... I just tried to make it fun and not say like... "i wont love you any less"... I just figure I would take it one day at a time. He is very good and telling me his feelings and we talk through things. Right now he is just excited at the thought of a Baby. I think it will be more realistic when the baby comes.
Hope it helps... sorry kinda long

At the OB I was going to they do an u/s at the first visit.
Not to bring a downer to you but I would wait until after the first trimester. Too many m/c's happen during then. Maybe I am overly cautious since I just had one but I know I am telling NO ONE next time.
