Remedies for a cough

My great grandmother made her own cough syrup she pureed cherries (no pits of course) and mint leaves. Boil (you might have to add water and then reduce to syrup) and strain.

She also would crush fresh garlic and let it 'stew' in local honey and she would add it to hot tea.

Zinc cough drops will help heal your throat faster than normal ones.

Good luck!

I use hot ginger tea (I know you don't like tea but this is just pure ginger root--no tea leaves--in a tea bag; found it at a local health food store) with at least a teaspoon of honey.

I've heard of mixing a teaspoon of honey with white pepper but I only have black pepper and I couldn't bring myself to try it anyway.

Hope you feel better soon!

Well...when Ilivedin Ukraine a few years ago...where people can't afford 'traditional' medicine because they can't afford to eat & take meds...it's one or the other....they take the roots of the garlic bulbs and burn them, inhaling the smoke...supposedly it has medicinal properties in it?  On the other hand...this was a country where old wives tales rule...They will not drink ANYTHING that's cold in the winter time because the cold  (water, juice, milk...nothing) will 'get into their throats' and make them sick...but they'll eat ice cream while walking down the street when it's -20 degrees...literally...before the wind chill.

And don't even think of sitting on a cement wall outside in the winter if you're of child bearing age....the babooshkas will come up and start yelling at you because if you sit on the cold cement...you're going to freeze your important baby-making parts and never give birth again.

There was a woman I knew there who was Ukrainian married to an American.  When she was pregnant, the old babushkas kept telling her she was going to have a miscarriage because:

1)  She was too tall;
2)  She shaved her legs;
3)  She wore shorts.

When her son was born healthy as could be, it was deemed a miracle from God he'd survived...and then at one month old, they told her that her baby was too active and she needed to get him in to see the dr immediately for psychological help...

All this basically means...it's up to you if you feel like trying the Ukrainian cure and smoke some garlic roots or not...but w/o wanting to take meds...you're just gonna have to cough up your liver.

However...you might want to cough up your liver by going in the bathroom, shutting the door and breathing in the hot steam and see if that would sooth your chest a little?  Or get a cup of ho****er (no, I'm not going to tell you to drink that tea that would probably help you if you'd only suck it up & drink it)...add a little vics vapor rub to it, put a towel over your head w/the cup under the towel with you and breath in the fumes...see if that'd help sooth your cough too.

Hope you feel better soon.  It's probably best if you forego shaving your legs and wearing shorts until you have this baby though.

Oh yeah...my husband and son also have some nasty cough that's been lingering for months....they had mycoplasma and took the meds for it, but are still hacking (this has been going on for 3-4 months now)...My DH read somewhere on line that eating hot chili peppers helps a cough...so that's what he's been doing and it seems to help him a little.  I personally would rather cough up my liver...me and spicyt food are not friends...but if you can tolerate it, give it a try.  I don't know what type of chilis he's eating, but they make jalepenos seem like a bell pepper.  He fried some up tonight and almost killed me...it was like he was spraying mace/pepper spray in the kitchen.
